Background: Resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) offers a chance of cure, but recurrence is common and survival is often limited. The clinical and pathological characteristics of long-term survivors have not been well studied.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 212 patients who underwent partial hepatectomy for HCC with curative intent from 1992 to 2006. Fifty patients who survived beyond 10 years were compared with 109 patients who died of recurrence within 10 years.

Results: Multivariate analysis showed that tumors <5 cm (odds ratio [OR] 2.3, p = 0.04), solitary tumors (OR 3.2, p = 0.01), and absence of vascular invasion (OR 2.3, p = 0.04) were independently associated with actual 10-year survival. However, more than 20% of long-term survivors also possessed established poor prognostic factors, including α-fetoprotein >1000 ng/mL, unfavorable serum inflammatory indices, tumor size >10 cm, microvascular invasion, poor tumor differentiation, cirrhosis, and metabolic syndrome. None of the 10-year survivors had an R1 resection. While 77% of the short-term survivors developed recurrence within 2 years, 42% of the 10-year survivors developed recurrence during their decade of follow-up, although most of the recurrences among 10-year survivors were intrahepatic and amenable to further treatment. Among patients who survived beyond 10 years, 42% remained alive without recurrence.

Conclusions: In this largest Western series of actual 10-year survivors after HCC resection, almost one in four patients survived over a decade, even though nearly half of this subset had developed recurrence. While many well-known variables were associated with a poor outcome, only a positive microscopic margin precluded long-term survival.

Background: The current study aimed to examine second breast cancer (SBC) risks associated with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and unilateral mastectomy among breast cancer (BC) survivors.

Methods: The study enrolled patients with diagnoses of stages I to III BC who underwent surgery between 2000 and 2019. Fine-Gray competing risk regression models were used to estimate the cumulative incidence of SBC and to evaluate the associations between clinical factors and SBC development.

Purpose: Lymphoma survivors who have received curative intent treatment are currently followed up at defined time points in medical and nurse-led clinics often indefinitely. The follow up protocol is often at the discretion of the treating physician. The aim of the study was to explore the clinical, biochemical and radiological presentation of patients with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) and Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) treated with curative intent at the point of recurrence from first remission, and to understand if recurrence was detected at scheduled follow up.

Background: The advancement of early detection and treatment has brought about a significant concern for male breast cancer (MBC) survivors-the emergence of a second primary malignancy (SPM) poses a grave threat to their lives. Among them, second primary prostate cancer (spPCa) holds particular significance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of spPCa on the prognosis of MBC patients.

Objectives: Long-term kidney outcomes after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are little quantified and understood. We aimed to describe the frequency of kidney dysfunction screening during follow-up and the prevalence of long-term kidney disease.

Design: Retrospective cohort of pediatric ECMO patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (mL/min/1.

Long-term outcomes in total arch replacement combined with frozen elephant trunk for acute type A aortic dissection.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

November 2024

Department of Vascular Surgery, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Objective: The optimal surgical approach for acute type A aortic dissection involving the aortic arch remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of acute type A aortic dissection treated with total arch replacement combined with frozen elephant trunk implantation in a large single-center cohort.

Methods: From 2010 to 2022, patients with acute type A aortic dissection who received total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk implantation at Fuwai Hospital were selected for clinical data collection and long-term follow-up.
