Locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer is a heterogeneous disease with typically poor outcomes. Select patients may benefit from the integration of surgery, whereas patients with bulky, multistation, or contralateral (N3) mediastinal involvement are managed with definitive chemoradiation. Attempts to improve outcomes through induction, consolidation, or maintenance chemotherapy or radiation dose escalation have not demonstrated a survival benefit. Current research efforts focus on the integration of novel systemic agents that exploit tumor-specific driver mutations, augment antitumor immune response, or enhance radiation sensitivity.

Background: Aortoiliac disease (AID) is a variant of peripheral artery disease involving the infrarenal aorta and iliac arteries. Similar to other arterial diseases, aortoiliac disease obstructs blood flow through narrowed lumens or by embolization of plaques. It has been hypothesized that DNA damage has the potential to induce DNA hypermethylation, contributing to carcinogenesis in mammals. However, there is no sufficient evidence to support that DNA damage can cause genome-wide DNA hypermethylation. Here, we demonstrated that DNA single-strand breaks with 3'-blocked ends (DNA 3'-blocks) can not only reinforce DNA methylation at normally methylated loci but also can induce DNA methylation at normally nonmethylated loci in plants.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with major vasculature tumor extension is considered an advanced stage of disease to which palliative radiotherapy or chemotherapy is proposed. Menstrual pain affects women's quality of life and productivity, yet objective molecular markers for its severity have not been established owing to the variability in blood levels and chemical properties of potential markers such as plasma steroid hormones, lipid mediators, and hydrophilic metabolites. To address this, we conducted a metabolomics study using five analytical methods to identify biomarkers that differentiate menstrual pain severity. This study included 20 women, divided into mild (N = 12) and severe (N = 8) pain groups based on their numerical pain rating scale.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has dramatically advanced non-invasive human brain mapping and decoding. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) non-invasively measure blood oxygen fluctuations related to brain activity, like fMRI, at the brain surface, using more-lightweight equipment that circumvents ergonomic and logistical limitations of fMRI. HD-DOT grids have smaller inter-optode spacing (~ 13 mm) than sparse fNIRS (~ 30 mm) and therefore provide higher image quality, with spatial resolution ~ 1/2 that of fMRI, when using the several source-detector distances (13-40 mm) afforded by the HD-DOT grid.
