To measure the laser radiation power in the experimental and clinical medicine the authors developed a compact, easily inserted in any laser medical installation power measurer. The measurer consists of the photodetector--silicon photoresistor, temperature-compensating photoresistor, operational amplifier and feeding block. The merit of the measurer is its constructive simplicity, reliability in work.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed external dose-rate signals from remote dose-rate meters (DRMs) in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients to understand the excretion of radioactive iodine (RAI) post-treatment.
  • It involved 110 patients monitored during hospitalization, revealing that the median effective half-life (T) of iodine was 12.60 hours and that higher BMI, lower GFR, and diabetes were linked to longer T values.
  • The research concluded that remote DRMs are effective for monitoring radiation levels and can help optimize hospital isolation periods, enhancing both patient comfort and staff efficiency.

Article Synopsis
  • The paper outlines a new method for providing total body irradiation (TBI) that minimizes pulmonary toxicity by using block-filtered 6 MV X-rays from a linear accelerator (LINAC).
  • A special setup using a 2-cm thick block and a large treatment area reduced the dose rate to 10 cGy/min, and a TBI-specific dose calculation model was validated for accurate treatment planning.
  • Results showed high target coverage and safety, with no pulmonary toxicities observed in 30 patients treated over more than two years.

Radioactivity estimation of radioactive hotspots using a Compton camera and derivation of dose rates in the surrounding environment.

Appl Radiat Isot

October 2024

Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, 790-1 Motooka Aza Ohtsuka, Tomioka-machi, Futaba-gun, Fukushima, Japan. Electronic address:

At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, radiation sources released in the accident were deposited on various equipment and building structures. During decommissioning, it is crucial to understand the distribution of radiation sources and ambient dose equivalent rates to reduce worker exposure and implement detailed work planning. In this study, the author introduces a method for visualizing radiation sources, estimates their radioactivity using a Compton camera, and derives the dose rate around the radiation sources.

Distribution of natural radioactivity in different geological formations and their environmental risk assessment in Malaysia.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

June 2024

Department of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Science, Curtin University Malaysia, CDT 250, 98009, Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Labuan, Miri, Kundasang and Raub regions of Malaysia have very different geological formations and settings that could result in different levels of natural radioactivity. Hence, this study determines the influence of different geological formations on radioactivity in these locations using field measurements, petrology and geochemistry. A total of 141 gamma dose rates and 227 beta flux measurements were collected using Polimaster survey meters (PM1405) in these four regions.

In this study, activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in 28 raw milk samples collected from different dairy farms in Dhaka city of Bangladesh were measured using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector for the first time. The activity concentration of Ra, Th, and K in the investigated fresh milk samples ranged from BDL (Below detection level) to 26 ± 1.6 Bq/kg, BDL to 11.
