Natural products (NPs) have been at the origin of several established drugs against tuberculosis (TB). Although the current clinical TB pipeline does not feature any candidates derived from new NP scaffolds, numerous novel NPs or NP analogs have been discovered in the recent past with promising activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). This includes newly discovered structures as well as known NP classes that had not been previously recognized to be active against Mtb. These compounds could help to replenish the dry clinical TB pipeline and, thus, contribute to improvements in the treatment of a devastating disease.

Purpose Of Review: Effective vaccines to prevent sexually transmitted Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection have eluded researchers for decades. However, recent studies of a promising vaccine in human trials, and emerging understanding of the complexity of the natural immune response to infection have provided hope for the eventual approval of a vaccine. This review highlights recent progress toward developing effective vaccines for Ct.

Purpose: Surgical research pipeline programs provide a unique insight into academic surgery, offering a distinctive opportunity for aspiring future surgeons and medical professionals to identify suitable mentorship. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of an academic summer research, shadowing, and mentorship program on undergraduate students with interest in the fields of medicine and surgery.
Methods: We conducted a convergent mixed methods study on undergraduate students who participated in the Surgery Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program from 2017 to 2022, excluding the 2020 cohort as their experience was highly impacted by COVID-19.

Large animal models of inherited retinal diseases, particularly dogs, have been extensively used over the past decades to study disease natural history and evaluate therapeutic interventions. Our group of investigators at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, has played a pivotal role in characterizing several of these animal models, documenting the natural history of their diseases, developing gene therapies, and conducting proof-of-concept studies. Additionally, we have assessed the potential toxicity of these therapies for human clinical trials, contributing to the regulatory approval of voretigene neparvovec-rzyl (Luxturna) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of patients with confirmed biallelic mutation-associated retinal dystrophy.
