Implementation of Principal Component Analysis (PCA)/Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Neural Networks in Constructing a Reduced-Order Model for Virtual Sensing of Mechanical Stress.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Fundación Centro Tecnológico CTC-Scientific and Technological Park of Cantabria (PCTCAN), Street Isabel Torres Nº 1, 39011 Santander, Spain.

This study presents the design and validation of a numerical method based on an AI-driven ROM framework for implementing stress virtual sensing. By leveraging Reduced-Order Models (ROMs), the research aims to develop a virtual stress transducer capable of the real-time monitoring of mechanical stresses in mechanical components previously analyzed with high-resolution FEM simulations under a wide range of multiple load scenarios. The ROM is constructed through neural networks trained on Finite Element Method (FEM) outputs from multiple scenarios, resulting in a simplified yet highly accurate model that can be easily implemented digitally.

Resuspended Nano-Minerals in Coal Ash: A Potential Factor in Elevated Lung Cancer Rates in Xuanwei and Fuyuan, Yunnan, China.

Toxics

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining & College of Geosciences and Surveying Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing 100083, China.

Xuanwei and the neighboring Fuyuan (XF) counties in Yunnan Province have the highest lung cancer incidence rates in China. Previous studies suggest that the nano-minerals released during the combustion of locally sourced "smoky" (bituminous) coal are the primary contributors to these elevated cancer rates. The coal ash generated during combustion predominantly consists of nano-minerals, which can be resuspended into the atmosphere during routine ash-handling activities.

Shock wave boundary/layer interactions (SWBLIs) are critical in high-speed aerodynamic flows, particularly within supersonic regimes, where unsteady dynamics can induce structural fatigue and degrade vehicle performance. Conventional measurement techniques, such as pressure-sensitive paint (PSP), face limitations in frequency response, calibration complexity, and intrusive instrumentation. Similarly, MEMS-based sensors, like Kulite sensors, present challenges in terms of intrusiveness, cost, and integration complexity.

Cancer immunotherapy using engineered cytotoxic effector cells has demonstrated significant potential. The limited spatial complexity of existing models, however, poses a challenge to mechanistic studies attempting to approve existing approaches of effector cell-mediated cytotoxicity within a three-dimensional, solid tumor-like environment. To gain additional experimental control, we developed an approach for constructing three-dimensional (3D) culture models using smart polymers that form temperature responsive hydrogels.
