In recent decades, terrain modelling and reconstruction techniques have increased research interest in precise short and long distance autonomous navigation, localisation and mapping within field robotics. One of the most challenging applications is in relation to autonomous planetary exploration using mobile robots. Rovers deployed to explore extraterrestrial surfaces are required to perceive and model the environment with little or no intervention from the ground station. Up to date, stereopsis represents the state-of-the art method and can achieve short-distance planetary surface modelling. However, future space missions will require scene reconstruction at greater distance, fidelity and feature complexity, potentially using other sensors like Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR). LIDAR has been extensively exploited for target detection, identification, and depth estimation in terrestrial robotics, but is still under development to become a viable technology for space robotics. This paper will first review current methods for scene reconstruction and terrain modelling using cameras in planetary robotics and LIDARs in terrestrial robotics; then we will propose camera-LIDAR fusion as a feasible technique to overcome the limitations of either of these individual sensors for planetary exploration. A comprehensive analysis will be presented to demonstrate the advantages of camera-LIDAR fusion in terms of range, fidelity, accuracy and computation.

Despite the crucial role of these materials in promoting sustainable production and consumption models, systematic studies on the current innovation terrain are lacking, leaving gaps in understanding key players, emerging technologies, and market trends. To address this void, we focused on examining patents related to biobased monomers and polymers, aiming to describe the innovation strategies and business dynamics of leading assignees.

Assessing vines' vigour is essential for vineyard management and automatization of viticulture machines, including shaking adjustments of berry harvesters during grape harvest or leaf pruning applications. To address these problems, based on a standardized growth class assessment, labeled ground truth data of precisely located grapevines were predicted with specifically selected Machine Learning (ML) classifiers (Random Forest Classifier (RFC), Support Vector Machines (SVM)), utilizing multispectral UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) sensor data. The input features for ML model training comprise spectral, structural, and texture feature types generated from multispectral orthomosaics (spectral features), Digital Terrain and Surface Models (DTM/DSM- structural features), and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) calculations (texture features).

To address the challenges of slow convergence speed, poor convergence precision, and getting stuck in local optima for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) three-dimensional path planning, this paper proposes a path planning method based on an Improved Human Evolution Optimization Algorithm (IHEOA). First, a mathematical model is used to construct a three-dimensional terrain environment, and a multi-constraint path cost model is established, framing path planning as a multidimensional function optimization problem. Second, recognizing the sensitivity of population diversity to Logistic Chaotic Mapping in a traditional Human Evolution Optimization Algorithm (HEOA), an opposition-based learning strategy is employed to uniformly initialize the population distribution, thereby enhancing the algorithm's global optimization capability.

Mountains with complex terrain and steep environmental gradients are biodiversity hotspots such as the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, it is generally assumed that mountain terrain plays a secondary role in plant species assembly on a millennial time-scale compared to climate change. Here, we investigate plant richness and community changes during the last 18,000 years at two sites: Lake Naleng and Lake Ximen on the eastern TP with similar elevation and climatic conditions but contrasting terrain.
