Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of pathogens such as is among the top 10 threats to global health. However, clinical and molecular data are scarce in Zambia. We, therefore, evaluated the AMR profiles of nosocomial infections (NIs).

Plasmid genomic epidemiology of carbapenem-hydrolysing class D β-lactamase (CDHL)-producing in Canada, 2010-2021.

Carbapenems are last-resort antibiotics for treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant , but carbapenem resistance is a rising global threat due to the acquisition of carbapenemase genes. Oxacillinase-48 ( )-type carbapenemases are increasing in abundance in Canada and elsewhere; these genes are frequently found on mobile genetic elements and are associated with specific transposons. This means that alongside clonal dissemination, genes can spread through plasmid-mediated horizontal gene transfer.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), specifically those resistant to only ertapenem among carbapenems (ETP-mono-resistant), are increasingly reported, while the optimal therapy options remain uncertain. To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of ETP-mono-resistant CRE, CRE strains were systematically collected from 102 hospitals across China between 2018 and 2021. A 1:1 randomized matching study was conducted with ETP-mono-resistant strains to meropenem- and/or imipenem-resistant (MEM/IPM-resistant) strains.

Nanopore sequencing elucidates development of meropenem resistance by insertion of a mobile genetic element in the porin gene in .

An ESBL-producing isolate recovered from a patient undergoing long-term treatment developed resistance to meropenem without acquiring carbapenem-hydrolysing enzymes. We performed Nanopore and Illumina sequencing and subsequent full hybrid genome assembly of this isolate and the meropenem-susceptible isolate recovered almost 8 weeks prior. Whole genome MLST patterns did not differ between isolates.

enzyme SME-2 isolated from sputum in New Zealand.

Canterbury Health Laboratories/Te Waipounamu/Waitaha Canterbury, Te Whatu Ora-Health New Zealand, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Introduction: The enzymes (SMEs) are chromosomally encoded Ambler Class A carbapenem-hydrolysing β-lactamases, which distinctively express resistance to carbapenems while remaining susceptible to extended-spectrum cephalosporins. Global reports of SMEs are infrequent. Here we describe the isolation of an SME-2-producing from the sputum of a patient who was hospitalized at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand.
