Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and histopathological findings of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) using cisplatin powder mixed with degradable starch microspheres (DSM) (Cis/DSM-TACE) compared with cisplatin arterial infusion (Cis-AI).

Materials And Methods: Eighteen rabbits with VX2 liver tumors were divided into two groups: Cis/DSM-TACE (n = 9) and Cis-AI (n = 9) groups. In the Cis/DSM-TACE group, a mixture of cisplatin powder and DSM was injected until stasis of hepatic arterial flow was achieved. In the Cis-AI group, cisplatin solution was infused.

Results: The platinum concentrations in VX2 tumors in the Cis/DSM-TACE group at 24 and 72 h were significantly elevated compared with those in the Cis-AI group (P = .016 and .019, respectively). There were no significant differences in the platinum concentrations in plasma. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of several microspheres inside the tumors at 1 h, which completely disappeared at 24 h. Tumor cell apoptosis at 1 h in the Cis/DSM-TACE group was more frequently observed compared with that in the Cis-AI group (P = .006).

Conclusions: TACE using cisplatin powder mixed with DSM provides a higher drug concentration in tumors, thereby achieving stronger antitumor effects compared with arterial infusion of cisplatin solution.

There is growing interest in the use of electrospun polymeric nanofibers in drug delivery systems due to their remarkable surface-to-volume ratio, which enhances the processes of drug loading, specific cell binding and proliferation. The preferred polymers for drug delivery must be biocompatible and biodegradable. Gum tragacanth is one of the materials of choice for drug delivery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of a nonselective transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) method using cisplatin powder for treating multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after initial promising results from the Japanese Interventional oncology group.
  • A review of medical records from TACE-naïve patients showed that out of 60 patients, the overall survival duration was 30.3 months, with a 65% overall response rate and 86.7% disease control rate.
  • The results indicated that the DDP-H TACE treatment effectively reduced tumors while maintaining liver function, with minimal cases of lasting liver impairment.

This study presents a simple and energy-efficient self-assembly LAG synthetic method for novel water-soluble copper(I) complexes [Cu(terpy)(PTA)][PF] () and [Cu(terpy)(PTA)][PF] (). They were characterized by FT-IR, H, and P{H} NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction (for ). The X-ray analysis of compound indicates a bidentate coordination mode of terpyridine to the metal center.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mangiferin (MGF), derived primarily from the mango tree, exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which may help combat diseases like diabetes, obesity, and various cancers by inhibiting abnormal cell growth.
  • - The compound has shown promise in treating lung, liver, ovarian, prostate, breast, stomach, and oral cancers through multiple forms of administration, including nanoparticles and combinations with other drugs to enhance efficacy and bioavailability.
  • - MGF acts through various mechanisms such as targeting enzymes and tumor growth factors, promoting apoptosis, and increasing sensitivity to chemotherapy in resistant tumors, though additional research and clinical trials are necessary to fully understand its potential in cancer treatment.

Cisplatin is one of the most important antitumor drugs, however; it has numerous adverse effects like nephrotoxicity which is considered one of cisplatin uses . The study was planned to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of M. oleifera leaves extract loaded gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.
