A precise measurement of the Sn half-life.

Appl Radiat Isot

Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada, V5A 1S6.

Published: January 2017

The Sn isotope was produced via fast, 14.1MeV neutron activation of natural tin and studied with a background shielded HPGe detector. To enable time-resolved γ-ray spectroscopy to precisely measure the half-life of Sn, a commercial DAQ was replaced with a CAMAC-based analogue DAQ. The deadtime response of the applied DAQ was verified for the measurement. The half-life of Sn was measured to be 13.91±0.03 days and the I(158.6keV)/I(156.0keV) γ-ray ratio was measured to be 43.6±1.5.

Global meta-analysis shows action is needed to halt genetic diversity loss.

Nature

January 2025

International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Conservation Genetics Specialist Group (CGSG), .

Mitigating loss of genetic diversity is a major global biodiversity challenge. To meet recent international commitments to maintain genetic diversity within species, we need to understand relationships between threats, conservation management and genetic diversity change. Here we conduct a global analysis of genetic diversity change via meta-analysis of all available temporal measures of genetic diversity from more than three decades of research.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates predictors of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in immunosuppressed patients with connective tissue disease undergoing pulsed-methylprednisolone (p-MPSL) therapy.
  • It is a retrospective cohort study that analyzed 200 patients' data, identifying key baseline characteristics linked to increased risk of CMV infection, including age, platelet count, lymphocyte count, and specific blood ratio metrics.
  • The findings highlight that older age and low blood cell counts significantly elevate the likelihood of CMV antigen positivity, providing insights for risk assessment in similar patient populations.

Department of Medicine for Older People, Amsterdam UMC, Location Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Amsterdam Public Health, Aging and Later Life, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Objective: Psychotropic drugs are frequently prescribed for challenging behavior in residents with dementia in nursing homes. Recommendations on psychotropic drug use for challenging behavior are described in the Dutch multidisciplinary guideline "Problem behavior in dementia." This study aimed to gain insight into the adherence to guideline recommendations on drug type and timing of evaluations of different types of psychotropic drugs for challenging behavior in a national sentinel network of Dutch nursing homes.

Utility of a C-Spirulina Stable Isotope Gastric Emptying Breath Test in Diabetes Mellitus.

January 2025

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

Background: The carbon-13 spirulina gastric emptying breath test (GEBT) is approved to identify delayed, but not accelerated, gastric emptying (GE). We compared the utility of the GEBT to scintigraphy for diagnosing abnormal GE in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Methods: Twenty-eight patients with diabetes ate a 230-kcal test meal labeled with technetium 99 m and C-spirulina, after which 10 scintigraphic images and breath samples (baseline, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, and 240 min) were collected on 2 occasions 1 week apart.
