Objective: to analyze the use and perception of generic drugs by people with diabetes and hypertension in São Paulo City, Brazil, considering the Brazilian Generic Drug Policy.
Methods: this was a cross-sectional study using data from a household health survey (ISA-Capital) in 2003; analysis was performed on knowledge regarding generic drugs and on the association between their use and sociodemographic and socio-economic characteristics.
Results: 603 people with hypertension and diabetes were included in the study, low use of generic drugs was found (33.3% and 26.3, respectively) and low cost was the major reported advantage of generic drugs (71.0% and 71.1%, respectively); there was no statistically significant difference between the use of generic medication and age, sex or schooling.
Conclusion: low cost and there being no difference between generic drug use and education level strengthen the importance of generic drugs for promoting equity and universal access to medication.

: N-acetyl-galactosamine small interfering RNAs (GalNAc-siRNA) are an emerging class of drugs due to their durable knockdown of disease-related proteins. Direct conjugation of GalNAc onto the siRNA enables targeted uptake into hepatocytes via GalNAc recognition of the Asialoglycoprotein Receptor (ASGPR). With a transient plasma exposure combined with a prolonged liver half-life, GalNAc-siRNA exhibits distinct disposition characteristics.

mRNA technology can replace the expensive recombinant technology for every type of protein, making biological drugs more affordable. It can also expedite the entry of new biological drugs, and copies of approved mRNA products can be treated as generic or biosimilar products due to their chemical nature. The introduction of hundreds of new protein drugs have been blocked due to the high cost of recombinant development.

Semaglutide and liraglutide are long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists used to treat type-2 diabetes and obesity. Recent advances in peptide synthesis and analytical technologies have enabled the development of synthetic generic peptide for reference listed drugs (RLD) originating from recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology. Since the original semaglutide and liraglutide were produced through rDNA technology, there has been great interest in developing their synthetic peptides as generic versions of the original drugs.
