Spatially and temporally resolved measurements are of great importance in turbulent premixed flame studies, especially when investigating rapid processes such as when flame local extinction, re-ignition, or flashback occur in a reacting flow. Here, an experimental approach for simultaneously probing two different species at high frame rates (50 kHz) is presented by employing a multi-YAG laser system. The laser radiation at 355 nm generated by a multi-YAG laser system was split into two beam paths: one beam for exciting formaldehyde and the other for pumping an optical parametric oscillator (OPO). To be able to capture the resulting fluorescence at such a high frame rate without significant loss in spatial resolution, two framing cameras, containing a total of 16 intensified charge-coupled devices (CCDs), were employed. In principle, the proposed setup provides the possibility of probing formaldehyde and simultaneously accessing the distribution of one other relevant species at this high frame rate. In this demonstration, the laser wavelength was tuned to 283 nm and, in conjunction with the 355 nm beam path, simultaneously high speed two-dimensional (2D) visualization of OH-radicals and formaldehyde was achieved. A modified flat flame, McKenna-type burner was used to provide a turbulent premixed jet-flame supported by a surrounding pilot flame. Local flame extinction and re-ignition processes were recorded for fuel/air jet speeds of 120 m/s.

This study presents an innovative electrostatic spray flame synthesis (ESFS) reactor that combines the advantages of electrostatic spray and flame synthesis for precise spray control and efficient single-step continuous synthesis. To overcome the limitations of conventional ESFS systems, which often suffer from low atomized precursor flux, we successfully demonstrated a high-flux disk electrostatic atomizer coupled low-swirl flame reactor, achieving a precursor flux of up to 30 ml/h about 30 times higher than that of typical ESFS devices. The atomized precursor being rapidly carried away from the burner is undergoing high-temperature pyrolysis and particle formation through lifted premixed turbulent flames.

The combustion of hydrogen and carbon-monoxide mixtures, so-called syngas, plays an increasingly important role in the safety context of non-fossil energy generation, more specifically in the risk management of incidents in process engineering plants for ammonia synthesis and in nuclear power plants. In order to characterize and simulate syngas/air combustion on industrially relevant scales, subgrid modelling is required, which is often based on a reaction progress variable. To understand the influence of different fuel compositions, turbulence intensities and flame topologies on different possible definitions of reaction progress variable, detailed chemistry direct numerical simulations data of premixed, lean hydrogen/air and syngas/air flames has been considered.

The current work aimed to improve the combustion behavior of a non-premixed twin-jet inlet. The effect of fuel and air inlet shape under different velocities was studied using ANSYS as the process takes place in species transport and finite rate/eddy dissipation, and the flow is considered to be turbulent. Two different shapes (circular-circular and circular-elliptic inlet jets) were investigated, and the results show that the behavior and intensity of the fire are affected by variations in the speed and, geometry of the inlet which affects temperature, heat release rate, combustion efficiency, and equivalent ratios.
