Comprehensive data mining of the scientific literature has become an increasing challenge. To address this challenge, Elsevier's Pathway Studio software uses the techniques of natural language processing to systematically extract specific biological information from journal articles and abstracts that is then used to create a very large, structured, and constantly expanding literature knowledgebase. Highly sophisticated visualization tools allow the user to interactively explore the vast number of connections created and stored in the Pathway Studio database. We demonstrate the value of this structured information approach by way of a biomarker use case example and describe a comprehensive collection of biomarkers and biomarker candidates, as reported in the literature. We use four major neuropsychiatric diseases to demonstrate common and unique biomarker elements, demonstrate specific enrichment patterns, and highlight strategies for identifying the most recent and novel reports for potential biomarker discovery. Finally, we introduce an innovative new taxonomy based on brain region identifications, which greatly increases the potential depth and complexity of information retrieval related to, and now accessible for, neuroscience research.

Tuning Fluorination of Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes with Enhanced Reverse-Selective Hydrogen Separation From Helium.

Small

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Frontier Science Center for Smart Materials, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Liaoning, Dalian, 116024, China.

Membrane technology has been explored for separating helium from hydrogen in natural gas reservoirs, a process that remains extremely challenging due to the sub-Ångstrom size difference between H and He molecules. Reverse-selective H/He separation membranes offer multiple advantages over conventional helium-selective membranes, which, however, suffer from low H/He selectivity. To address this hurdle, a novel approach is proposed to tune the ultra-micropores of carbon molecular sieves (CMS) membranes through fluorination of the polymer precursor.

Background: The role of activating alterations in the MAPK pathway in predicting immunotherapy efficacy in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients is largely unknown. The aims of the randomized, phase II SQUINT trial were to assess the efficacy of nivolumab plus ipilimumab (NI) versus platinum-based chemotherapy plus nivolumab (N-CT) and to identify clinically available biomarkers of response to immunotherapy in patients with advanced or metastatic LSCC.

Methods: SQUINT was an open-label, randomized, parallel, non-comparative, phase II trial of NI versus N-CT in chemo-naïve, metastatic or recurrent LSCC adult patients.

Parasitic helminths secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their host tissues to modulate immune responses, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We demonstrate that Ascaris EVs are efficiently internalised by monocytes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and increase the percentage of classical monocytes. Furthermore, EV treatment of monocytes induced a novel anti-inflammatory phenotype characterised by CD14, CD16, CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) cells.

Bibliometric analysis of laryngeal cancer treatment literature (2003-2023).

Heliyon

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Second People's Hospital of Shenzhen, the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, 518035, China.

Background: Despite advancements in medical science, the 5-year survival rate for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma remains low, posing significant challenges in clinical management. This study explores the evolution of key topics and trends in laryngeal cancer research. Bibliometric and knowledge graph analysis are utilized to assess contributions in treating this carcinoma and to forecast emerging research hotspots that may enhance future clinical outcomes.

Exploring the synergistic effect of NaOH/NaClO absorbent in a novel wet FGD scrubber to control SOx/NOx emissions.

Environ Monit Assess

January 2025

International Joint Research Center For Green Energy and Chemical Industry, School of Chemical Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, 200237, People's Republic of China.

Escalating SOx and NOx emissions from industrial plants necessitates customized scrubbing solutions to improve removal efficiency and tackle cost limitations in existing wet FGD units. This work investigates the real-time intensified removal pathways via an innovative two-stage countercurrent spray tower configuration strategically integrating NaOH (M) and NaOH/NaClO (M/M) to remove SOx and NOx emissions simultaneously from the industrial stack through a comprehensive parametric study of absorbents concentration, reaction temperature, gas flow rate, liquid to gas ratio (F/F), and absorbent showering head. Flue gas stream comprising SO bearing 4500 ppm, SO bearing 300 ppm, 70 ppm NO, and 50 ppm NO brought into contact with two scrubbing solutions as M, and a complex absorbent of M/M at varying respective ratios.
