Background: Preventative pesticide seed treatments (hereafter preventative pest management or PPM) are common corn and soybean treatments, and often include both fungicides and neonicotinoid insecticides. While PPM is intended to protect crops from soil-borne pathogens and early season insect pests, these seed treatments may have detrimental effects on biological control of weed seeds by insects.
Methods: Here, in two 3-year corn-soy rotations in Pennsylvania USA, we investigated a PPM approach to insect management compared to an integrated pest management approach (IPM) and a "no (insect) pest management" (NPM) control.

Nematode parasitic infections continue to be a major health problem for humans and animals. Drug resistance to currently available treatments only worsen the problem. Drug discovery is expensive and time-consuming, making drug repurposing an enticing option.

Hypnozoites - dormant Plasmodium parasites in the liver - can cause relapse infections and form a major obstacle to malaria eradication. The mechanisms controlling dormancy remain poorly understood, but hypnozoite formation and reactivation is likely regulated by a combination of parasite intrinsic factors and external stimuli. We reviewed current knowledge of Plasmodium dormancy and drew parallels with dormancy in other parasites and life-cycle stages.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), caused by the highly variable PRRS virus (PRRSV), presents a significant challenge to the swine industry due to its pathogenic and economic burden. The virus evades host immune responses, particularly interferon (IFN) signaling, through various viral mechanisms. Traditional vaccines have shown variable efficacy in the field, prompting the exploration of novel vaccination strategies.

Malaria remains the fifth deadliest parasitic infection worldwide, despite significant advancements in technology. A major challenge in combating this disease lies in the growing resistance of malaria parasites to antimalarial drugs and insect vectors to insecticides. The emerging inefficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) further exacerbates the issue.
