The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) pretreatment against cadmium (Cd)-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Wistar rats were divided into control group, LBP group (300 mg/kg orally, once a day, for 30 days), Cd group (CdCl 4 mg/kg i.p. once), and LBP + Cd group (LBP 300 mg/kg orally, once a day, for 30 days + CdCl 4 mg/kg i.p. 24 h after the last treatment). Cd liver injury was examined by morphological/histological changes, transaminases, total protein concentration, and oxidative stress evaluated by MDA, 3NT, GSH, SOD, and TEAC activities. Cd intoxication caused gross morphological changes with hyperemia of the parenchyma, increased volume, and disappearance of the anatomical limits of the lobes associated with an increase of ALT, GSH, and TEAC in plasma and a decrease of MDA, GSH, and TEAC in liver, SOD, and total proteins in plasma. LBP pretreatment caused a slight improvement in the histological architecture and in the 3NT amount together with a significant improvement of hematic parameters. On the basis of the obtained results, we can affirm that LBP pretreatment can ameliorate liver conditions, but further studies are needed to better evaluate the protective antioxidant effects of LBP against Cd-induced toxicity.

Background: Cellular senescence can be categorized into two main types, including exogenous and endogenous aging. Photoaging, which is aging induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, significantly contributes to exogenous aging, accounting for approximately 80% of such cases. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is a class of antioxidant enzymes, with SOD2 being predominantly localized in the mitochondrial matrix.

Chronic non-specific low back pain disability and depressive symptoms in working men and women: a cross-sectional study.

Rheumatol Int

December 2024

University Department of Rheumatology, Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital Center, Vinogradska cesta 29, Zagreb, 10000, Croatia.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzed 203 Croatian workers aged 35-65, using the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) for disability and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) for depressive symptoms.
  • * Results showed that higher disability levels were correlated with severe depression, older age, longer work experience, and greater pain intensity, suggesting the need for screening for depression to tailor treatment plans.

Background:  Anatomical and histological features of the thoracolumbar fascia may play an active role in chronic low back pain (LBP). This study aimed to evaluate the efcacy of interfascial injection in patients with LBP.

Methods:  Sixty participants with chronic LBP were recruited for this study.

Objective: Bone single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) preferentially localizes areas exhibiting greater bone remodeling and enhanced perfusion, which helps identify areas of pain and inflammation in the lumbar facet joints (LFJs). Herein, we investigated the treatment outcome of intraarticular (IA) corticosteroid injection in patients with LFJ-origin lower back pain (LBP) depending on the presence of increased LFJ uptake on bone SPECT.

Methods: We retrospectively recruited 38 patients with LFJ-origin LBP.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (Lpb. plantarum), as a safe probiotic microorganism, has been documented for its production of multiple bioactive compounds, such as exopolysaccharides (EPS), which have been used in the treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric ulcers. The present study aims to investigate the prophylactic and antiulcerogenic effects of the potential probiotic Lbp.
