Biocompatible and fluorescent superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with superior magnetic properties coated with charged polysaccharide derivatives. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Syntheses and characterizations of biocompatible superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with embedded curcumin and coated with ultrathin layer of hyaluronic acid-curcumin (HA-Cur) conjugate have been reported. Zeta potential measurements confirmed effective coating of native iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized by cationic derivative of chitosan (SPION-CCh) with the synthesized HA-Cur conjugate. Both SPIONs with embedded curcumin and the ones coated with HA-Cur (SPION-CCh/HA-Cur) revealed desired magnetic characteristics while fluorescent properties were much better for the coated nanoparticles. SPION-CCh/HA-Cur nanoparticles were shown to be very promising candidates for T MRI contrast agents as they can easily penetrate cell membrane and their relaxivity is exceptionally high (ca. 470mMs). They may be also tracked using confocal fluorescence microscopy due to the presence of fluorescent curcumin in the coating. In vitro studies indicated that the obtained SPIONs-CCh/HA-Cur were non-toxic for EA.hy926 endothelial cells.

Background: Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are among the most important causes of viral respiratory tract infections, causing similar symptoms. IAV and SARS-CoV-2 infections can provoke mild symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, or they may cause more severe consequences leading to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome or even death. While treatments for IAV and SARS-CoV-2 infection are available, IAV antivirals often target viral proteins facilitating the emergence of drug-resistant viral variants.

Ovarian cancer remains one of the main causes of human mortality, accounting for millions of deaths every year. Despite of several clinical options such as chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), hormonal treatment, radiation therapy, and surgery to manage this disease, the mortality rate is still very high. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for innovative approaches to improve both diagnosis and treatment.

To investigate the remediation effect of iron-manganese-modified biochar from different biomasses (FM-BC) on Cd-contaminated alkaline soil, FM-BC was prepared using branches of , durian shells, and corn stalks. The characteristics of FM-BC, the adsorption of Cd(Ⅱ) in water, and the available, fraction of Cd in alkaline soil were studied using bath adsorption and soil culture experiments. The results showed that the specific surface area, total pore volume, and oxygen content of FM-BC were significantly improved.

With the development of science and technology, there is a great demand for electromagnetic wave absorbing materials for both military and civilian purposes. Among them, carbonyl iron powder (CIP) has attracted a lot of attention due to its mature production system and good electromagnetic wave loss capability. However, the application of CIP is limited due to poor impedance matching, poor corrosion resistance, and poor oxidation resistance.

As wildfire events become more frequent, there is a need to better understand the impact of smoke on the environment and human health. Smoke, or biomass burning aerosol (BBA), can undergo atmospheric processing changing its chemical and optical properties. We examined the interactions between four lignin pyrolysis products (catechol, syringol, syringic acid, and vanillic acid) and three BBA-relevant iron oxide mineral phases (hematite, maghemite, and magnetite) using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dissolved iron measurements to better understand how atmospheric processing changes concentrations of soluble iron, iron oxidation state, and brown carbon abundance.
