Background/aims: Post-operative ileus (POI) is a common complication of abdominal surgery. DA-9701, an extract of Pharbitis Semen and Corydalis Tuber, is a new prokinetic agent that also alleviates visceral pain. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DA-9701 can ameliorate POI in rats.
Methods: A total of 32 rats were divided into 4 groups: no surgery/no medication (NSNM), no surgery/medication (NSM), surgery/no medication (SNM), and surgery/medication (SM). Gastrointestinal transit (GIT), which is assessed by migration of charcoal, and cumulative stool weight were measured at 24 hours after surgery.
Results: GIT was significantly more delayed in the SNM group than in the other groups (SNM vs NSNM, < 0.001; SNM vs NSM, < 0.001; SNM vs SM, = 0.005). Cumulative stool weight in that group was also lower than in the no surgery groups (SNM vs NSNM, = 0.007; SNM vs NSM, = 0.033), and there was no significant difference between the SM group and the no surgery groups (SM vs NSM, = 0.703; SM vs NSNM, = 0.347).
Conclusion: DA-9701 can ameliorate POI by reducing delayed GIT and improving defecation in a rat model of POI.

Introduction: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) management guidelines are currently derived from the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) which has been shown to be poorly effective in controlling symptoms for these patients. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that has been used extensively as a prokinetic agent for the gastrointestinal tract. The management of LPR with prokinetics is a novel therapy being investigated with regard to its effectiveness.

To establish a consensus on the definition and management of idiopathic gastroparesis, international experts (selected by neurogastroenterology and motility societies and initiated by the Rome Foundation) devised 144 statements using the Delphi method, with at least 80% agreement required. This consensus defined idiopathic gastroparesis as the presence of symptoms associated with delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Nausea and vomiting were identified as cardinal symptoms.

Background: Kampo medicines are often used in Japan as therapy for the side effects induced by oral kinase inhibitors. However, the pharmacokinetic interactions between Kampo medicines and oral kinase inhibitors such as lenvatinib have not been studied.
Objective: We investigated the effects of Kampo medicines (rikkunshito, shakuyakukanzoto and goreisan) on the steady-state plasma trough concentration (C) of lenvatinib in patients with thyroid cancer.
Introduction: Postoperative ileus is a severe condition occurring especially in high-risk patients following acute and prolonged surgical procedures. Multiple factors are described as important in etiology, such as inflammation as well as neurological, hormonal and pharmacological influences. In prevention and treatment, we try to apply non-pharmaceutical procedures, to influence reversible etiological factors and, in post-operative period, to implement and use ERAS procedures.
