Body-worn inertial sensors have enabled motion capture outside of the laboratory setting. In this work, an inertial measurement unit was attached to the upper arm to track and discriminate between shoulder motion gestures in order to help prevent shoulder over-use injuries in athletics through real-time preventative feedback. We present a detection and classification approach that can be used to count the number of times certain motion gestures occur. The application presented involves tracking baseball throws and volleyball serves, which are common overhead movements that can lead to shoulder and elbow overuse injuries. Eleven subjects are recruited to collect training, testing, and randomized validation data, which include throws, serves, and seven other exercises that serve as a large null class of similar movements, which is analogous to a realistic usage scenario and requires a robust estimator.

Human biopotential signals, such as electrocardiography, are closely linked to health and chronic conditions. Electromyography, corresponds to muscle actions and is pertinent to human-machine interactions. Here, we present a type of smart and flexible watchband that includes a mini flexible electrode array based on Mo-Au filament mesh, combined with mesoscopic hybridized silk fibroin films.

Inspired by the complex fractal morphologies and deformations observed in animals and plants, an -dimensional soft structure composed of stretchable electronic bits has been developed. This soft structure, capable of independent and cooperative motion, can be manipulated through the programming of bits using a machine language based on instruction encoding. This method simplifies the process of changing the bit's step temperature to control its binary state.

Conductive hydrogels are ideal candidates for developing flexible electronic devices, but they still cannot exhibit excellent strength, satisfactory toughness and high conductivity in sync, greatly limiting their further applications. Inspired by the structure-enhanced properties of natural tissues, we adopted a straightforward and efficient methodology for constructing strong and tough anisotropic short-chain chitosan-based hydrogels with salting-assisted tensile remodeling treatment. The anisotropic hydrogels present anisotropic mechanical and electrochemical performance due to the oriented arrangement of chitosan and P(AM-AA) macromolecular networks.

Social robots have been widely used to deliver emotional, cognitive and social support to humans. The exchange of affective gestures, instead, has been explored to a lesser extent, despite phyisical interaction with social robots could provide the same benefits as human-human interaction. Some studies that explored the touch and hugs gestures were found in literature, but there are no studies that investigate the possibility of delivering realistic caress gestures, which are, in turn, the easiest affective gestures that could be delivered with a robot.
