Understanding the mechanics of the respiratory system is crucial for optimizing ventilator settings and ensuring patient safety. While simple models of the respiratory system typically consider only flow resistance and lung compliance, lung tissue resistance is usually neglected. This study investigated the effect of lung tissue viscoelasticity on delivered mechanical power in a physical model of the respiratory system and the possibility of distinguishing tissue resistance from airway resistance using proximal pressure measured at the airway opening.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an oxygen scavenging mask device in reducing local oxygen concentrations from nasal cannula ventilation compared to a standard open facial surgical field.
Methods: This is a controlled experiment using a custom-fabricated silicone midfacial oxygen scavenging device, SimMan airway management trainer manikin (Laerdal Medical, Stavanger, Norway), handheld oxygen detector (Forensics Detectors, Los Angeles, United States) and oxygen from a Datex Ohmeda Aisys Carestation anesthesia unit (GE HealthCare, Chicago, United States). Oxygen concentrations were measured at 18 facial landmarks (Fig.

Background: Anxiety is common preceding tooth extraction; hence, it is crucial to identify patients with dental anxiety (DA) and to manage DA. This study assessed the level of DA and influencing factors in tooth extraction patients in a dental hospital in China and changes in their blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during the tooth-extraction procedure.
Methods: The study was a cohort study.

Purpose: Neuromuscular monitoring is frequently plagued by artefacts, which along with the frequent unawareness of the principles of this subtype of monitoring by many clinicians, tends to lead to a cynical attitute by clinicians towards these monitors. As such, the present study aims to derive a feature set and evaluate its discriminative performance for the purpose of Train-of-Four Ratio (TOF-R) outlier analysis during continuous intraoperative EMG-based neuromuscular monitoring.
Methods: Patient data was sourced from two devices: (1) Datex-Ohmeda Electromyography (EMG) E-NMT: a dataset derived from a prospective observational trial including 136 patients (21,891 TOF-R observations), further subdivided in two based on the type of features included; and (2) TetraGraph: a clinical case repository dataset of 388 patients (97,838 TOF-R observations).
