Methylergometrine has widely been used pharmacologically to treat conditions such as pain, addiction, vasoconstriction, migraines, and Parkinson's disease. Despite its side effects, it is used as a therapeutic agent and research material for various diseases based on its natural potential; however, the regulatory effect of its interaction with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) has not yet been investigated. The α3β4 nAChR is an ion channel essential for neurotransmission within the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and autonomic nervous systems.

Objective: To evaluate the comparative efficacy of two of the most commonly used second-line uterotonics-methylergonovine maleate and carboprost tromethamine.
Methods: We conducted a double-blind randomized trial at two large academic perinatal centers in patients undergoing nonemergency cesarean delivery with uterine atony refractory to oxytocin, as diagnosed by the operating obstetrician. The intervention included administration of a single dose of intramuscular methylergonovine or carboprost intraoperatively at diagnosis.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate prophylactic uterotonics, antifibrinolytic medications, and vasoconstrictive agents in the prevention of hemorrhage during second-trimester abortions.
Data Sources: PubMed, Embase (Elsevier platform), Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (Ovid platform), and Web of Science were searched from database creation to October 30, 2023.
Study Eligibility Criteria: Randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, and case series evaluating pregnant individuals (between 13 0/7 and 27 6/7 weeks of gestation) who underwent dilation and evacuation and received prophylactic uterotonics (methylergonovine, carboprost, oxytocin, or misoprostol), antifibrinolytic medications (tranexamic acid), or vasoconstrictive agents (vasopressin, lidocaine with epinephrine) were included in the study.
