In 1974, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommended a ban on the use of silica sand abrasives containing >1% silica due to the risk of silicosis. This gave rise to substitutes including coal slag. An Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigation in 2010 uncovered a case cluster of suspected pneumoconiosis in four former workers at a coal slag processing facility in Illinois, possibly attributable to occupational exposure to coal slag dust. This article presents the results from a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health industrial hygiene survey at the same coal slag processing facility and a second facility. The industrial hygiene survey consisted of the collection of: (a) bulk samples of unprocessed coal slag, finished granule product, and settled dust for metals and silica; (b) full-shift area air samples for dust, metals, and crystalline silica; and (c) full-shift personal air samples for dust, metals, and crystalline silica. Bulk samples consisted mainly of iron, manganese, titanium, and vanadium. Some samples had detectable levels of arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, and cobalt. Unprocessed coal slags from Illinois and Kentucky contained 0.43-0.48% (4,300-4,800 mg/kg) silica. Full-shift area air samples identified elevated total dust levels in the screen (2-38 mg/m) and bag house (21 mg/m) areas. Full-shift area air samples identified beryllium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, nickel, manganese, and vanadium. Overall, personal air samples for total and respirable dust (0.1-6.6 mg/m total; and 0.1-0.4 mg/m respirable) were lower than area air samples. All full-shift personal air samples for metals and silica were below published occupational exposure limits. All bulk samples of finished product granules contained less than 1% silica, supporting the claim coal slag may present less risk for silicosis than silica sand. We note that the results presented here are solely from two coal slag processing facilities, and more in-depth air monitoring is needed to better characterize occupational exposure to coal slag dust, metals, and silica at similar facilities.

To improve the mechanical and durability properties of low liquid limit soil, an eco-friendly, all-solid, waste-based stabilizer (GSCFC) was proposed using five different industrial solid wastes: ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), steel slag (SS), coal fly ash (CFA), flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum, and carbide slag (CS). The mechanical and durability performance of GSCFC-stabilized soil were evaluated using unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), and freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles. The Rietveld method was employed to analyze the mineral phases in the GSCFC-stabilized soil.

To enhance the water stability and bearing capacity of the Shandong Ming Dong Expressway's soaked subgrade, carbide slag (CS) and coal gangue powder (CG) were used as stabilisers. Stabiliser dosages of 5%, 10%, and 15%, with the CS:CG ratios of 0:100, 30:70, 50:50, 70:30, and 100:0, were tested. The study evaluated the performance of CS-CG stabilised soil through unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests at 7 and 28 days, six dry-wet cycles, a 30-day water immersion test, pH test, swell rate test, XRD, SEM, and MIP analyses.

The synergistic utilization of multiple solid waste is an effective means of achieving green filling and resource utilization of solid waste in mines. In this paper, the synergistic effects of solid waste granulated blast furnace slag (GS) and carbide slag (CS) as cementitious materials (GCCM) are investigated, along with their preliminary feasibility in combination with coal gangue (CG) and furnace bottom slag (FBS) for the preparation of backfill materials. The synergistic hydration mechanism, mechanical properties, working performance of GCCM and GBC were studied, and the environmental impact and cost-effectiveness of GBC were evaluated.

Gallium, a critical and strategic material for advanced technologies, is anomalously enriched in certain coal deposits and coal by-products. Recovering gallium from solid residues generated during coal production and utilization can yield economic benefits and positive environmental gains through more efficient waste processing. This systematic literature review focuses on gallium concentrations in coal and its combustion or gasification by-products, modes of occurrence, gallium-hosting phases, and hydrometallurgical recovery methods, including pretreatment procedures that facilitate metal release from inert aluminosilicate minerals.
