Published: May 2017

Objectives: To assess perceptions of illness severity and terminality in caregivers of advanced heart failure (HF) patients and how these perceptions influence utilization of palliative care and end-of life services.

Background: HF is a terminal disease; yet patients and caregivers do not understand the severity of HF or acknowledge disease terminality.

Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative design with in-depth interviews and content analysis.

Results: Most caregivers did not understand the severity of HF (68%) or disease terminality (67%). Patients were more likely to receive services when their caregivers expressed an understanding of illness severity and/or terminality.

Conclusions: Inclusion of caregivers in discussions of goals of care, advance care planning, and palliative care and end-of-life services with patients and providers is imperative.

Background: The management of patients with subclavian artery injury is rapidly evolving from an open to an endovascular approach. We aim to present an analysis of management and a comparison of outcomes according to the type of approach used to treat these challenging injuries.

Methods: Adult patients with subclavian arterial injuries were abstracted from the National Inpatient Sample database from 2012 to 2014 and 2016 to 2021.

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) carries a high economic cost and clinical morbidity in the United States. Beyond prolonged admissions and poor post-injury functional status, there is an additional cost of chronic shunt-dependent hydrocephalus for many aSAH patients. Adjuvant lumbar drain (LD) placement has been hypothesized to promote clearance of subarachnoid blood from the cisternal space, with an ultimate effect of decreasing shunt placement rates.

Aim: To study the prognostic significance of hematologic indices: neutrophils/lymphocytes (N/L), platelets/lymphocytes (P/L) and lymphocytes/C-reactive protein (L/CRP) in relation to the complicated course of new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), as well as their correlation with COVID-19 course severity indices and endothelial dysfunction marker sVCAM-1.

Materials And Methods: 103 patients with new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were included in the study. Based on the data of multispiral computed tomography (CT) of the chest organs, all patients were divided into 3 groups: CT group 1 - 30 patients, CT group 2 - 62 patients and CT group 3 - 11 patients.
