X-ray analyzer-based phase-contrast imaging is combined with computed laminography for imaging regions of interest in laterally extended flat specimens of weak absorption contrast. The optics discussed here consist of an asymmetrically cut collimator crystal and a symmetrically cut analyzer crystal arranged in a nondispersive (+, -) diffraction geometry. A generalized algorithm is given for calculating multi-contrast (absorption, refraction and phase contrast) images of a sample. Basic formulae are also presented for laminographic reconstruction. The feasibility of the method discussed was verified at the vertical wiggler beamline BL-14B of the Photon Factory. At a wavelength of 0.0733 nm, phase-contrast sectional images of plastic beads were successfully obtained. Owing to strong circular artifacts caused by a sample holder, the field of view was limited to about 6 mm in diameter.

Superimposed Wavefront Imaging of Diffraction-enhanced X-rays: sparsity-aware CT reconstruction from limited-view projections.

Purpose: In this paper, we describe an algebraic reconstruction algorithm with a total variation regularization (ART + TV) based on the Superimposed Wavefront Imaging of Diffraction-enhanced X-rays (SWIDeX) method to effectively reduce the number of projections required for differential phase-contrast CT reconstruction.

Methods: SWIDeX is a technique that uses a Laue-case Si analyzer with closely spaced scintillator to generate second derivative phase-contrast images with high contrast of a subject. When the projections obtained by this technique are reconstructed, a Laplacian phase-contrast tomographic image with higher sparsity than the original physical distribution of the subject can be obtained.

Article Synopsis
  • Phase-contrast computed tomography (CT) using synchrotron-generated x-rays allows for high-contrast, 3D imaging of soft tissues, but traditional methods suffer from spatial resolution issues due to the required distance between the specimen and the x-ray camera.
  • The new technique, Superimposed Wavefront Imaging of Diffraction-enhanced x-rays (SWIDeX), uses a unique setup to eliminate this distance, resulting in superior spatial resolution compared to conventional methods.
  • The effectiveness of SWIDeX was demonstrated by visualizing internal structures of various human tissues, which showed clearer 3D images when compared to traditional pathological techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • Hybrid nanofluids (HNFs) were created by dispersing ZnO-MgO metallic oxide nanoparticles in various base fluids using a cost-effective thermal plasma technique, resulting in stable mixtures.
  • The study found a slight reduction in the band gaps of coolant and engine oil-based HNFs, while coconut oil-based HNFs exhibited a higher band gap than their pristine counterparts, indicating potential optical applications.
  • Thermal conductivity tests showed significant increases with temperature across different HNF mixtures, particularly noted in coolant, suggesting their potential use as advanced heat transfer fluids in various industries.

X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) methods give access to contrast mechanisms that are based on the refractive properties of matter on top of the absorption coefficient in conventional x-ray imaging. Ultra small angle x-ray scattering (USAXS) is a phase contrast mechanism that arises due to multiple refraction events caused by physical features of a scale below the physical resolution of the used imaging system. USAXS contrast can therefore give insight into subresolution structural information, which is an ongoing research topic in the vast field of different XPCI techniques.

Crystal Analyzer Based Multispectral Microtomography Using CCD-Sensor.

To solve the problems of spectral tomography, an X-ray optical scheme was proposed, using a crystal analyzer in Laue geometry between the sample and the detector, which allowed for the selection of predetermined pairs of wavelengths from the incident polychromatic radiation to obtain projection images. On a laboratory X-ray microtomography setup, an experiment was carried out for the first time where a mixture of micro-granules of sodium chloride NaCl, silver behenate AgCHO, and lithium niobate LiNbO was used as a test sample to identify their spatial arrangement. The elements were chosen based on the presence of absorption edges in two of the elements in the energy range of the polychromatic spectrum of the probing radiation.
