The cyclo-P complexes [Cp Ta(CO) (η -P )] (Cp : Cp''=1,3-C H tBu , Cp'''=1,2,4-C H tBu ) turned out to be predestined for the formation of hollow spherical supramolecules with non-classical fullerene-like topology. The resulting assemblies constructed with CuX (X=Cl, Br) showed a highly symmetric 32-vertex core of solely four- and six-membered rings. In some supramolecules, the inner cavity was occupied by an additional CuX unit. On the other hand, using CuI, two different supramolecules with either peanut- or pear-like shapes and outer diameters in the range of 2-2.5 nm were isolated. Furthermore, the spherical supramolecules containing Cp''' ligands at tantalum are soluble in CH Cl . NMR spectroscopic investigations in solution revealed the formation of isomeric supramolecules owing to the steric hindrance caused by the third tBu group on the Cp''' ligand. In addition, a 2D coordination polymer was obtained and structurally characterized.

Nano-supramolecules based on artificial macrocycles can not only regulate assembly morphology but also boost phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET). Herein, a water-soluble phosphorescence supramolecule was constructed from the hyaluronic acid-modified bromophenylpyridinium (HAPY), cucurbit[]uril (CB[], = 7/8), and energy acceptor phenyl-bridged phenothiazine derivatives, displaying efficient PRET and achieving near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence by macrocyclic CB[] and the assembly confinements. As compared with weak phosphorescent nanofibers of HAPY/CB[7], the spherical nanoparticles of HAPY/CB[8] not only gave strong green phosphorescence with extended lifetime to 1.

Understanding how particles pack in space and the mechanisms underlying symmetry selection across soft matter is challenging. The Frank-Kasper (F-K) phase of complex spherical packing is amongst the most fascinating phases; however, it has not been observed in discotic liquid crystals until now. Herein, we report the first observation of F-K phases of charge transfer complexes (CTCs) obtained from triphenylene derivatives as donors and 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone as the acceptor.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoction is a complex polydispersed phase system containing colloid solution, emulsion and suspension, which maybe induced by the supramolecular phenomenon in decoction. However, until now there is no systematic analysis of composition and formation mechanism of supramolecules in TCM decoction contained mineral drug and herb medicines. Maxing Shigan Decoction (MXSGT), one of the classic TCM recipes, has been widely used in the treatment of fever in clinic.

ConspectusFor optical and electronic applications of supramolecular assemblies, control of the hierarchical structure from nano- to micro- and millimeter scale is crucial. Supramolecular chemistry controls intermolecular interactions to build up molecular components with sizes ranging from several to several hundreds of nanometers using bottom-up self-assembly process. However, extending the supramolecular approach up to a scale of several tens of micrometers to construct objects with precisely controlled size, morphology, and orientation is challenging.

Supramolecules have been drawing increasing attention recently in addressing healthcare challenges caused by infectious pathogens. We herein report a novel class of guanidinium-perfunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Gua-POSS) supramolecules with highly potent antimicrobial activities. The modular structure of Gua-POSS consists of an inorganic T10 or T8 core ( = 10 or 8), flexible linear linkers of varying lengths ( = 1 or 3), and peripherally aligned cationic guanidinium groups as the membrane-binding units.
