A water-soluble polysaccharide (STPC2) was isolated from the boiling-water extract of Sargassum thunbergii, purified by CaCl precipitation and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and Sephacryl S-300 column. It was found that STPC2, with a molecular weight of 57kD, was composed of fucose, xylose, galactose and glucuronic acid, in a ratio of 8.1: 3.8: 2.1: 1.0. Additionally, we found that STPC2 significantly inhibited endothelial cell migration and tube formation without toxicity. Moreover, STPC2 significantly inhibited lung cancer cell A549 migration and proliferation. It was found that STPC2 treatment suppressed MMP-2 gene expression at transcriptional level and enzymatic activity. Furthermore, STPC2 reduced the mRNA and protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 alpha in the endothelial cells. Taken together, our findings indicated that STPC2 was a potent bioactive polysaccharide with distinct anti-angiogenesis activity against tumor migration via down-regulation of MMP-2 activity and VEGF/HIF-1α signaling pathway.

Sargassum thunbergii (ST), Sargassum horneri (SH), Grateloupia livida (GI), and Ulva pertusa (UP) are common seaweed in the East China Sea. This study investigated the epiphytic microbial communities associated with these four seaweeds in the intertidal zone of Gouqi Island, using natural seawater (SW) and sediment (S) as controls. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons was employed to compare the community structures.

This study investigated the diversity of endophytic fungi isolated from the brown seaweed, collected from six coastal regions in Korea: Gangneung, Pohang, Buan, Taean, Tongyeong and Yeosu. A total of 154 fungal strains were isolated using ITS rDNA sequence analysis, resulting in 84 species across 43 genera. Species diversity, assessed based on the Shannon index, was highest in Tongyeong (H'=3.

Free and bound phenolic profiles and antioxidant ability of eleven marine macroalgae from the South China Sea.

Front Nutr

October 2024

Hainan Engineering Research Center of Aquatic Resources Efficient Utilization in South China Sea, Key Laboratory of Seafood Processing of Haikou, Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Functional Food of Hainan Province, School of Food Science and Engineering, Hainan University, Haikou, China.

Marine macroalgae are of broad interest because of their abundant bioactive phenolic compounds. However, only a few previous studies have focused on bound phenolic compounds. In this study, there were significant differences in total phenolic content, total phlorotannin content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant ability in free and bound forms, as well as in their bound-to-free ratios, among 11 marine macroalgal species from the South China Sea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different salinity levels affect arsenic uptake and transformation in three seaweed species over 14 days.
  • High salinity led to rapid arsenic accumulation, especially in Sargassum thunbergii, which reached near-total uptake in just seven days.
  • All three seaweed species methylated arsenic and released dimethylarsinic acid (DMAA), with S. horneri exhibiting the least tolerance to low salinity, indicating distinct responses to varying salinity conditions.
