The purpose of this article is to: (a) describe sources of variability in reading and spelling performance of children learning English as a second language, with a specific emphasis on Spanish-speaking children; (b) encourage teachers and clinicians to consider these differences when developing intervention plans; and (c) suggest specific intervention procedures that might facilitate development of reading and spelling skills of Spanish-speaking children with language difficulties and limited English proficiency. An integrated approach to intervention is highlighted that addresses reading and spelling as reciprocal processes. Implementation of this approach is presented using various contexts for learning and strategies specific to developing second-language reading and writing skills.

This longitudinal study explored the contribution of transcription skills, oral language abilities, and executive functions in kindergarten to written production in grade 1 among Spanish-speaking children (N = 191) through structural equation modeling (SEM). Three dimentions of written production were assessed, including productivity, quality, and syntactic complexity. Accordingly, three SEM models were tested to explore these relationships, and the estimated models for each endogenous variable demonstrated good fit.

Given shifts to dimensional models of personality pathology and a growing consensus that personality disorder (PD) often onsets during adolescence, there is a need for validated measures of PD in adolescents. Level of Personality Functioning (LPF) is particularly relevant for the identification of emerging personality dysfunction in adolescents given its ability to capture developmental discontinuity as metacognitive capacities in self- and interpersonal-functioning emerge. However, no studies as of yet have validated a measure of LPF in a sample of Spanish-speaking adolescents.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is one of the largest federal food and nutrition program serving women and young children and has a low coverage rate of about 50 percent. There is no peer-reviewed article that compares maternal perceptions of challenges and barriers to WIC participation by language and participation status. We compare challenges and barriers faced by English-speaking mothers to those faced by Spanish-speaking mothers to enrollment and retention in WIC within each group: current participants (n = 43), prior participants (dropouts; n = 27), and eligible non-participants (n = 18), using focus groups we conducted in Missouri in 2021-2023.

Objective: To compare preparation for transition in adolescents in the United States prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Study Design: We used data from the 2019 and 2021 National Survey of Children's Health to compare transition preparation before and after the COVID-19 pandemic among adolescents who had a medical care visit within the preceding year, controlled for relevant potential confounders. The association of demographic factors and survey year with a composite measure of adequate transition preparation was evaluated using univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression.
