Background: Oxidative stress is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) is an antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) variations such as single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) or haplotypes within the SOD gene are reportedly associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. However, it remains to be determined whether SOD1 variability is associated with cardiovascular or all-cause mortality in the general population.
Methods And Results: This prospective cohort study included 2799 subjects who participated in a community-based health study with a 10-year follow-up. We genotyped 639 SNPs and found the association of SNP rs1041740 and rs17880487 within a SOD1 gene with cardiovascular mortality. There were 193 deaths during the follow-up period including 57 cardiovascular deaths. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis revealed that the homozygous T-allele of rs1041740 was associated with all-cause and cardiovascular deaths after adjusting for confounding factors. The net reclassification index was significantly improved by adding rs1041740 as a cardiovascular risk factor. On the other hand, cardiovascular death was not observed in homozygous T-allele carriers of rs17880487. Haplotype analysis identified the haplotype with T-allele of rs1041740 and that with T-allele of rs17880487 as increasing and decreasing susceptibility for cardiovascular mortality, and it had complementary SNP sequences.
Conclusion: Variation in the SOD1 gene was associated with cardiovascular deaths in the general population.

Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent cause of death. Acute PE may be treated either with full anticoagulation (AC) alone or thrombolytic therapy with systemic tissue-- type-plasminogen-activator (tPA) based on risk assessment. Currently, AC is the standard of care for most patients with intermediate-high-risk PE, with low-dose tPA emerging as an effective alternative.

Background: Patients with acute myocardial infarction and angiographically obstructive non-culprit lesions are at high risk for recurrent major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). However, it remains largely unknown whether events are due to stenosis severity or due to the underlying high-risk lesion morphology.
Methods: Between January 2017 and December 2021, 1312 patients with acute myocardial infarction underwent optical coherence tomography of all the 3 main epicardial arteries after successful percutaneous coronary intervention.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the global burden of early-onset cancer based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study for 29 cancers worldwid.
Methods And Analysis: Incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and risk factors for 29 early-onset cancer groups were obtained from GBD.
Results: Global incidence of early-onset cancer increased by 79.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. The differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into functional cardiomyocytes offers significant potential for disease modeling and cell-based cardiac therapies. However, hPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hPSC-CMs) remain largely immature, limiting their experimental and clinical applications.

Objective: This study examines the association between family economic decision-making power and survival outcomes among older adults.
Methods: Data were drawn from the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) from 2005 to 2018. Family economic decision-making power was assessed based on participants' self-reported influence over household financial matters, categorized as: "making decisions on almost all household expenditures", "deciding on non-essential spending", "only deciding on personal expenditures", and "having no decision-making power over household spending".
