The regulation of the acid-base balance and pH is critical for the organism. The most important buffer system is CO / HCO. The kidney controls systemic bicarbonate and therefore the metabolic regulation and the lung is relevant for respiratory regulation by an effective CO elimination. There are four acid-base disorders with two metabolic and two respiratory disorders (acidosis and alkalosis). The anion gap enables a further workup of metabolic acidosis.

Association between anion gap/calcium ratio and 30-day all-cause mortality in sepsis patients with diabetes mellitus.

Sci Rep

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Chengdu First People's Hospital, No.18 North Vientiane Road, High-Tech Zone, Chengdu, 610000, Sichuan, China.

We aimed to determine the association between anion gap-to-calcium ratio (ACR) and 30-day mortality in sepsis patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Data for sepsis patients diagnosed with DM was extracted from Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care Database IV. After screening, 4429 eligible subjects were included in our study finally.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) plays important roles in the balance of oxidation and antioxidation in body mostly by scavenging superoxide anion free radicals (O). Previously, we reported a novel Cu/Zn SOD from jellyfish Cyanea capillata, named CcSOD1, which exhibited excellent SOD activity and high stability. TAT peptide is a common type of cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) that efficiently deliver extracellular biomacromolecules into cytoplasm.

Background: To evaluate the influence of sodium bicarbonate Ringer's solution (BRS) combined with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on the internal environment in patients who have undergone laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

Methods: A total of 128 patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery were randomly divided into the control group (group C), the PEEP group (group P), the BRS group (group B), and the BRS combined with the PEEP group (group BP). The results of arterial blood gas analysis, including pH value, base excess (BE), concentrations of electrolyte, and lactate (Lac) were documented before intravenous infusion (T0) and 5 min after the surgery (T1).

Background: The 15° left tilt position during caesarean delivery has been recommended by guidelines for many years, but recent studies have questioned the clinical benefit of left tilt position. We hypothesize that using a higher starting dose of metaraminol in the supine position will result in a non-inferior umbilical arterial pH, compared to the 15° left tilt position.

Methods: Healthy women undergoing elective caesarean delivery were randomized to the supine position (n = 62) or 15° left tilt position (n = 62) after spinal anaesthesia (0.

Hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis is a known complication following ileal conduit urinary diversion, often arising from urinary reabsorption in the ileum, which leads to chloride retention and bicarbonate loss and, though often asymptomatic, can produce clinically significant symptoms, particularly in patients with underlying renal impairment. A 75-year-old woman with a history of bladder cancer underwent cystectomy with ileal conduit diversion and presented on postoperative day 47 with anorexia, hypotension, and weight loss; laboratory findings revealed hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis with elevated serum chloride. The patient's acidosis gradually improved with sodium bicarbonate and Ringer's solution, stabilizing her blood pressure, creatinine, and acid-base balance, and she was discharged with outpatient follow-up.
