Background/aim: The aim of this study was to assess the role of serum pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in progression of liver cirrhosis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Patients And Methods: Serum levels of PEDF and MMP-9 were tested in 212 patients with liver cirrhosis and in a control group of 30 healthy volunteers. HCC was diagnosed in 45 of the 212 patients studied (21%).
Results: Serum PEDF and MMP-9 were higher in the study group than that in the control group (P < 0.001). In patients with alcoholic or mixed (alcoholic and viral hepatitis-related) cirrhosis, serum PEDF was higher than that in other patients (13970.2 ± 13406.9 ng/ml vs. 8563.5 ± 9602.7 ng/ml, P = 0.008). In patients with viral hepatitis-related cirrhosis, significantly higher PEDF levels were recorded in those with HCC (13429.1 ± 12045.8) than that in patients without HCC (6660.1 ± 7927.1; P = 0.04). There was a trend for higher serum MMP-9 in patients with HCC (5778.7 ± 12426.6 vs. 1389.8 ± 1944.7 in those without HCC; P = 0.07). Significant negative correlation between serum MMP-9 and serum alpha-fetoprotein in patients with HCC was observed (r = -0.54; P = 0.04).
Conclusion: Serum PEDF and MMP-9 could be auxiliary markers in diagnosis of HCC, especially in patients with low alpha-fetoprotein level. Alcohol consumption can affect serum PEDF.

Aims: Hyperglycemia induces pathophysiological changes. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress with Gα overexpression may promote hepatocyte death. This study investigated whether sustained hyperglycemia triggers ER stress-associated pyroptosis and fibrosis in the liver alongside an overexpression of Gα, and examined the potential link with VEGF-A levels.

Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of Compound Xuejie Powder combined with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on diabetic foot ulcers and its influence on the blood flow of the dorsal artery in the foot.
Methods: A total of 103 patients with diabetic foot ulcers, admitted to our hospital between February 2021 and March 2023, were included in this study. The control group was given NPWT on the basis of conventional treatment such as controlling blood sugar and blood pressure, anti-infection therapy and improving blood circulation, while the observation group was given Compound Xuejie Powder combined with NPWT on the basis of conventional treatment.

Transcriptomics of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients with premature aging revealed the upregulated pathways involved in glycerolipid metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, and pentose and glucuronate interconversion. To investigate natural strategies for modulating these implicated pathways, we examined the impact and underlying mechanism of luteoloside on premature AMD using a stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS)-associated AMD animal model in middle-aged mice that mimicked the dysregulated pathways observed in dry AMD patients with premature aging. Luteoloside supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β and lipofuscin, along with increased serum activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and elevated levels of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), and preserved retinal thickness and structure in AMD mice.

Several decades of heterochronic parabiosis (HCPB) studies have demonstrated the restorative impact of young blood, and deleterious influence of aged blood, on physiological function and homeostasis across tissues, although few of the factors responsible for these observations have been identified. Here we develop an in vitro HCPB system to identify these circulating factors, using replicative lifespan (RLS) of primary human fibroblasts as an endpoint of cellular health. We find that RLS is inversely correlated with serum donor age and sensitive to the presence or absence of specific serum components.

Background: To identify potential serum biomarkers for differentiating between axial psoriatic arthritis (axPsA) and peripheral psoriatic arthritis (pPsA).
Methods: Serum samples were collected from patients with PsA to create a biomarker discovery cohort and a verification cohort. Patients with PsA were classified into axial or peripheral subtypes based on imaging criteria.
