Published: September 2017

Background: The current study was performed to evaluate the anti-urolithiatic activity of Argemone mexicana L. leaves extracts as natural remedy to over come side effects problem due to the usage of modern synthetic medicine.

Methods: In vitro experiments (nucleation, aggregation and microscopic assay's) were performed to test the anti-urolithiasis activity of A. mexicana extracted using the four different solvents i.e. petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol, and water. These extracts were tested at increasing concentration of 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/ml and compared with the standard drug cystone.

Result And Discussion: The extracts were tested for the inhibition percentage of anti-urolithiasis potential against preformed calcium oxalate crystal. The results of A. mexicana extracts on nucleation assay were found to be significant and the methanol leaf extract showed considerable inhibition (72.26%) compared to standard cystone drug (62.96%) and in aggregation assay also the methanol leaf extract of A. mexicana showed significant inhibition (77.24%) compared to cystone (69.33%) at 100 mg/ml concentration. The microscopic assay clearly indicated that A. mexicana leaves extracts are capable to dissolve the calcium oxalate crystals.

Conclusion: The methanol extract of A. mexicana leaves contains anti-urolithiatic potentials by in vitro at a dose level of 100 mg/ml. The methanol extract of A. mexicana leaves can be further exploited as a potential anti-urolithiasis drug.

Parasitic diseases such as trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis pose significant health challenges in Africa. The Senegalese Pharmacopoeia, known for its many medicinal plants with anti-infectious properties, can be a source of antiparasitic natural products. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiparasitic activities of 33 methanolic extracts from 24 ethnopharmacologically selected plants against Trypanosoma brucei brucei and Leishmania mexicana mexicana, as well as their cytotoxic activities on WI-38 cells.

Lippia alba is a medicinal plant widely used by the inhabitants of northwest Mexico to relieve gastrointestinal and inflammatory problems; however, the phytochemical profile and bioactive potential of their polar fraction have been poorly studied. In this study phytochemical screening showed qualitatively the presence of phenolic compounds, tannins, and triterpenes in L. alba aqueous infusion and stem, flower, and leaves methanolic extracts.

Centro de Investigación en Biotecnología, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

Background: Linton & Epling subsp. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic medicinal plant, characterized by a high concentration of tilianin, a flavonoid with therapeutic potential in cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we have explored the use of colchicine to obtain autotetraploid lines of and analyze their morphological characteristics.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the antitrypanosomal effects of Crossopteryx febrifuga, a plant used in traditional African medicine to treat trypanosomiasis, and identifies active compounds in its extracts.
  • The researchers prepared four extracts using different solvents and found that the dichloromethane extract was the most effective against Trypanosoma brucei brucei.
  • Through metabolic profiling, 33 compounds were identified in the most active fractions, with maslinic, corosolic, and oleanolic acids linked to the observed antitrypanosomal activity, supporting the plant's traditional medicinal use.
