There is growing consensus that dementia has a long gestation period; it is known that neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques, the hallmarks of pathological change in dementia, are present in the brains of young adults. This study aimed to examine if decline in cognitive function can be detected earlier than previously thought. The researchers collected data from 10,308 participants aged 45-70 and tested them three times over ten years. They found that cognitive scores declined in all age that cognitive scores declined in all age categories (45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 and 65-70) with faster decline in older people.

Cognitive impairments are frequently observed in patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Thiamine deficiency is often found in AUD patients and has been suggested as a possible cause of cognitive impairments. While thiamine deficiency is not consistently present in all AUD patients with cognitive deficits, thiamine is traditionally prescribed to patients with AUD to treat or prevent cognitive impairment.

Background: Delirium is associated with patient prognosis after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). However, the prognostic impact of subsyndromal delirium, described as an intermediate stage between delirium and normal cognition, is uncertain. The present study aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of delirium severity in patients undergoing TAVI.

Background And Aims: For young children with intractable epilepsy caused by congenital abnormalities or acquired cortical lesions, pediatric hemispherectomy surgery (pHS) may offer the only path to seizure remediation. Although some sensory and motor outcomes of pHS are highly predictable, the long-term cognitive and functional sequelae of pHS are far more variable. With the aim of identifying potential post-pHS intervention targets, the current study examined daily executive functioning and self-awareness in adults with pHS and broadly intact cognitive outcomes (indicated by average or above performance on intelligence tests).

Background: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is widely used to treat carotid artery stenosis (CAS). However, the effects of CEA on unilateral CAS-induced cognitive impairment and the underlying mechanism remain poorly understood.
Methods And Results: Thirteen patients diagnosed with unilateral severe CAS underwent pre- and post-CEA assessments, including fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive assessments, and routine blood tests before and after CEA.
