We are not only passively immersed in a sensorial world, but we are active agents that directly produce stimulations. Understanding what is unique about sensory consequences can give valuable insight into the action-perception-cycle. Sensory attenuation is the phenomenon that self-produced stimulations are perceived as less intense compared to externally-generated ones.

A prebiotic model, based in the framework of thermodynamic efficiency loss from small dissipative eukaryote organisms is developed to describe the maximum possible concentration of solar power to be dissipated on topological circular molecules structures encapsulated in lipid-walled vacuoles, which floated in the Archean oceans. By considering previously, the analysis of 71 species examined by covering 18 orders of mass magnitude from the Megapteranovaeangliae to Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggest that in molecular structures of smaller masses than any living being known nowadays, the power dissipation must be directly proportional to the power of the photons of solar origin that impinge them to give rise to the formation of more complex self-assembled molecular structures at the prebiotic stage by a quantum mechanics model of resonant photon wavelength excitation. The analysis of 12 circular molecules (encapsulated in lipid-walled vacuoles) relevant to the evolution of life on planet Earth such as the five nucleobases, and some aromatic molecules as pyrimidine, porphyrin, chlorin, coumarin, xanthine, etc.

The Gaia hypothesis states that the Earth is an instance of life. However, appraisals of it tend to focus on the claim that life is a feedback self-regulator that controls Earth's chemistry and climate dynamics, yet, self-regulation by feedbacks is not a definitive characteristic of living systems. Here, we consider the characterization of biological systems as autopoietic systems (causally organized to self-produce through metabolic efficient closure) and then ask whether the Gaia hypothesis is a tractable question from this standpoint.

In this paper we develop the autopoietic approach to the definition of the living developed by Maturana and Varela in the Seventies. Starting from very simple observations concerning the phenomenology of life, we propose a reformulation of the autopoietic original definition of life which integrates some of the contemporary criticism to it. Our definitional proposal, aiming to stimulate the further development of the autopoietic approach, expresses what remains implicit in the definition of the living originally given by Maturana and Varela: life, as self-production, is a process of cognitive coupling with the environment.
