Follow-up results of 3,500 arthroscopic operations on the knee joint.

Chirurgische Abteilung, St. Marien-Hospitals Buer, Gelsenkirchen, Federal Republic of Germany.

Published: September 1989

In a clinical study the postoperative results of 3,500 arthroscopic operations on the knee joint were analyzed with a follow-up period of 1 year. At the time of examination 55.3% of patients were symptom-free, 33.8% had definite relief of symptoms and in 10.9% the symptoms were unchanged or progressive. The results of the different procedures performed varied widely, with the best results being obtained after meniscectomy. The average postoperative hospitalization was 3.5 days. Arthroscopy is a procedure with a low morbidity. Rehabilitation in the immediate postoperative period is accelerated due to reduced pain and functional impairment.

Purpose: Mesenchymal stem cells/medicinal signaling cells (MSCs) possess therapeutic potential and are used in regenerative orthopaedics. The infra-patellar fat pad (IFP) is partially resected during knee arthroscopy (KASC) and contains MSCs. Heat, irrigation, and mechanical stress during KASC may decrease MSC's therapeutic potential.

One double-loaded suture anchor is sufficient for all-inside arthroscopic anterior talofibular ligament repair.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

August 2023

Department of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Salerno, Salerno, Italy.

Purpose: All-inside anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) repair using anchors is frequently used to manage chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) with satisfactory functional outcomes. It remains unclear whether there are differences in the functional results between the use of one or two double-loaded anchors.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 59 CLAI patients who underwent an all-inside arthroscopic ATFL repair procedure from 2017 to 2019.

Background: Orthopedic surgeries are usually associated with excessive blood loss which leads surgeons to overestimate need for blood transfusions and over ordering of blood. The cross matched blood, when not used, leads to the wastage of blood bank resources in terms of time, money and manpower. The objective of this study was to investigate the compliance to previously proposed MSBOS and to provide updated recommendations for all orthopedic procedures.

Background: Postoperative pain and, in a more extended perspective, quality of recovery (QOR) should be considered the principal endpoints after day surgery. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and paracetamol are a cornerstone of pain treatment after painful day surgery. Nevertheless, NSAIDs are not always sufficiently effective, have numerous contraindications, and consequently are not suitable in up to 25 % of all patients.
