This study seeks to investigate the relationship between the structural modification and bioactivity of a series of tribenzyltin complexes with different ligands and substitutions. Complexation with the N,N-diisopropylcarbamothioylsulfanylacetate or isonicotinate ligands enhanced the anticancer properties of tribenzyltin compounds via delayed cancer cell-cycle progression, caspase-dependent apoptosis induction, and significant reduction in cell motility, migration and invasion. Halogenation of the benzyl ring improved the anticancer effects of the tribenzyltin compounds with the N,N-diisopropylcarbamothioylsulfanylacetate ligand. These compounds also demonstrated far greater anticancer effects and selectivity than cisplatin and doxorubicin, which provides a rationale for their further development as anticancer agents.

The synthesis and characterization of the series of organotin formates together with their thermolytic behavior are described. The diformate Bu(n)(2)Sn{OC(O)H}(2) (1) was synthesized by the reaction of Bu(n)(2)SnH(2) with formic acid. The triorganotin monoformate compounds R(3)SnOC(O)H (R = Cy (cyclohexyl)) 3, Mes, (mesityl, 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) 4, and Dmp (2,6-dimethylphenyl 5) were obtained by the reaction of R(3)SnOH with formic acid.

The reaction of tribenzyltin(IV) chloride and di(para-chlorobenzyl)tin(IV) dichloride with thiohydrazones derived by condensation of 2-phenylethyl N-thiohydrazide with benzaldehyde, salicaldehyde, p-methylacetophenone and cinnamaldehyde have been investigated in 1:1 molar ratio. These ligands act as neutral, bidentate species and coordinate to the central tin (IV) atom through the thiosulphur and azomethine nitrogen. The newly synthesized complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and molecular weight determination.

Some complexes of 2-phenylethyl dithiocarbamate, thiohydrazides and thiodiamines with dibenzyltin(IV) chloride, tribenzyltin(IV) chloride and di(para-chlorobenzyl)tin(IV) dichloride have been synthesized and investigated in 1:2 and 1:1 molar ratio. The dithiocarbamate ligand act as monoanionic bidentate and thiohydrazide, thiodiamines act as neutral bidentate ligand. The synthesized complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and molecular weight determination studies and their bonding pattern suggested on the basis of electronic, infrared, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Five novel organotin(IV) derivatives have been synthesized by refluxing trimethyl, triethyl, tributyl, and triphenyl and tribenzyltin chloride with Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and adenine. These compounds were characterized by spectroscopic (IR, (1)H, (13)C, (119)Sn-NMR, (119m)Sn Mössbauer) techniques and elemental analysis. Based on these results, trigonal bipyramidal geometry is suggested.
