Xanthelasma palpebrarum refers to xanthomas that occur more often near the inner canthus of the eyelid. Periorbital hyperpigmentation presents as a dark area surrounding the eyelids. In the present study, the authors examined the prevalence and the associated factors of periorbital hyperpigmentation among patients with xanthelasma. One hundred and fourteen patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum were examined for the presence of dark circles. Detailed questionnaires regarding the history of diabetes, hypothyroidism, smoking status, and weight were completed by all patients. They were also tested for serum lipids (cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, apolipoprotein A and apolipoprotein B). From the 114 patients with xanthelasma, 94 (82.4%) were diagnosed with periorbital hyperpigmentation. At the time of the survey, 46 patients were smokers (48.9%), 23 of them had hypothyroidism (24.4%), and 16 patients were obese (17%). Only four patients had a history of diabetes. Cholesterol levels were elevated in 65 patients (69.1%). In 52 patients (55.3%), low-density lipoprotein was increased and in 51 patients (54.2%), both cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein were elevated. Apolipoprotein A was increased in 35 patients (37.2%), whereas apolipoprotein B was increased in 23 patients (24.4%). This study showed that a significant number of patients with xanthelasma exhibited periorbital hyperpigmentation. Smoking, obesity, and hyperlipidemia were observed in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • This text outlines that authors must assign a level of evidence to their articles submitted to the journal.
  • It specifically states that the level mentioned is IV, which suggests it’s the lowest tier in the evidence ranking.
  • For more details about evidence-based ratings, authors should refer to the journal’s Table of Contents or the online guidelines provided by Springer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the incidence of the prostaglandin-associated periorbital syndrome (PAPS) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension after using topical prostaglandin analogues (PGAs) for 3-6 months.
  • Among the 55 patients studied, key indicators such as interpupillary distance and exophthalmos were measured, alongside subjective assessments of periocular changes, showing significant changes primarily at the 1 and 3-month marks.
  • Results indicated that bimatoprost resulted in the highest incidence of PAPS, with noticeable periorbital changes like eyelash growth and hyperpigmentation increasing over time.

Article Synopsis
  • Peri orbital hyperpigmentation (POH) is a common skin issue with various causes, and this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Biofillers vs. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy in treating it.
  • In a double-blinded randomized trial involving 42 patients, the results showed that Biofillers provided significant improvements in pigmentation, patient satisfaction, and had fewer side effects compared to PRP.
  • The study concluded that Biofillers are a more effective and safer treatment option for POH than PRP therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates common adverse events related to four prostaglandin medications used for glaucoma (latanoprost, bimatoprost, travoprost, and tafluprost) using the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.
  • - It involves a detailed statistical analysis of adverse event data, revealing that eye disorders, particularly iris hyperpigmentation and corneal irritation, are significant issues associated with these drugs.
  • - The findings indicate that adverse events occur differently over time across the medications, with latanoprost leading to longer onset times compared to bimatoprost, although the data can't definitively imply cause and effect.

Background: Collagen dermal fillers have shown efficacy in addressing age-related changes in facial appearance. However, their potential in rejuvenating the periorbital region remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness, clinical safety, and patient satisfaction associated with the utilization of collagen dermal fillers in individuals with dermatochalasis and periorbital hyperpigmentation.
