We report a histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study of a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin, which occurred in a 52 years old woman in the dermal, subcutis and soft tissues of the left buttock. Clinically this neoplasm, which was related to intramuscular injections and a to a following abscess, had rapidly reached unusual dimension compared with other cases of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin reported in the literature. The patient died three months after presentation with distant metastases. A variable percentage of the neoplastic cells was positive for low molecular weight cytokeratins (CK), neurofilaments (NF), neuron specific enolase (NSE) and occasionally for vaso-intestinal polypeptide (VIP). Ultrastructural investigations showed two types of neoplastic cells, identified for some features of the nucleus and of the cytoplasm; these two groups of cells are, in our opinion, related to different stages of cellular development. Our results, in agreement with some observations reported in the literature, give evidence of a possible origin of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin from an undifferentiated cell which is capable of neuroendocrine or ectodermal differentiation.

It is well known that clonal integration of the Merkel cell polyomavirus into the dermal precursor cells is a hypothesized pathway in Merkel cell carcinoma pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate a case of Merkel cell carcinoma (primary origin unknown) presenting with high Merkel cell polyomavirus DNA levels in swabs obtained from normal skin.

Background: Nasopharyngeal malignant tumors were relatively rare head and neck tumors with a low global incidence. There were various pathologic types of nasopharyngeal malignant tumors, and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) was a highly malignant subtype with rapid growth and early metastasis. SCNEC was rare in the nasopharynx, and its clinical presentation and treatment strategy were different from other types of nasopharyngeal malignancies, posing a challenge to clinicians.

A 34-year-old male patient with recently diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma underwent total thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection, requiring sharp dissection to separate the tumour from the trachea. He required post operative intubation due to bilateral vocal cord paralysis. He developed ischaemic necrosis of the upper two thirds of the trachea presenting with marked surgical emphysema and an infective wound.
