Reversed lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LCNPs) of the cubic micellar (I) phase have high potential in drug delivery applications due to their ability to encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug molecules. Their interactions with various interfaces, and the consequences for the particle structure and integrity, are essential considerations in their effectiveness as drug delivery vehicles. Here, we have studied LCNPs formed of equal fractions of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and glycerol dioleate in the presence of different fractions of the stabilizer Polysorbate 80. We have used a combination of ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring and neutron reflectometry to reveal the structure and composition of the adsorbed layer on both anionic silica and cationic (aminopropyltriethoxysilane) silanized surfaces. For both types of surfaces, there is a spread near-surface layer comprising lipid and polymer as well as a sparse coverage of intact particles. The composition of the near-surface layer is very close to that of the particles, in contrast to the lipid bilayer observed with related systems. The interaction is stronger for cationic than anionic surfaces, which is rationalized in terms of the negative zeta potential of the LCNPs. The work shows that the attachment of and spreading from LCNPs is influenced by the properties of the surface, the internal structure, composition and stability of the particles as well as the nature of the stabilizer.

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HpC) forms a liquid crystalline phase and is thought to have a rod-like shape in aqueous solution. The viscoelastic behaviors of aqueous solutions of HpC samples with average molar substitution numbers ( ∼ 3.8) and weight-average molar masses ( = 36-740 kg mol) were examined over a wide concentration () range, and the results were discussed based on a concept of rod particle suspension rheology.

Attachment of three different heterocycles with electron donor or acceptor character to a central 1,3,5-triazine core generates readily soluble side-chain free dyes with two displaying soft crystalline mesomorphism and one displaying a nematic liquid crystal phase as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy, calorimetry, gravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. Equally intriguing is the dyes' relatively strong electronic communication between donor and acceptor subchromophores that are meta-conjugated to one another, which is experimentally observed as a broad intramolecular charge-transfer absorption that can extend over 100 nm past the most intense absorption event and is computationally confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) evaluations of the molecular ground- and excited-state properties. This molecular design permits the preparation of dyes with panchromatic absorption not just based on the additive absorption of individual subchromophores.

Since formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) can release H, it is attractive to construct a bipolar hydrogen production system consisting of FOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although copper-based catalysts have attracted much attention due to their low cost and high FOR activity, the performance enhancement mechanism lacks in-depth investigation. Here, an amorphous-crystalline catalyst of amorphous nickel hydroxide-coated copper dendrites on copper foam (Cu@Ni(OH)/CF) is prepared.

As a phase change material (PCM), antimony exhibits a set of desirable properties that make it an interesting candidate for photonic memory applications. These include a large optical contrast between crystalline and amorphous solid states over a wide wavelength range. Switching between the states is possible on nanosecond timescales by applying short heating pulses.

Methanol (ME) is a liquid hydrogen carrier, ideal for on-site-on-demand H generation, avoiding its costly and risky distribution issues, but this "ME-to-H" electric conversion suffers from high voltage (energy consumption) and competitive oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we demonstrate that a synergistic cofunctional PtPd/(Ni,Co)(OH) catalyst with Pt single atoms (Pt) and Pd nanoclusters (Pd) anchored on OH-vacancy(V)-rich (Ni,Co)(OH) nanoparticles create synergistic triadic active sites, allowing for methanol-enhanced low-voltage H generation. For MOR, OH* is preferentially adsorbed on Pd and then interacts with the intermediates (such as *CHO or *CHOOH) adsorbed favorably on neighboring Pt with the assistance of hydrogen bonding from the surface hydrogen of (Ni,Co)(OH).
