While halogenation of graphene presents a fascinating avenue to the construction of a chemically and physically diverse class of systems, their application in photovoltaics has been hindered by often prohibitively large optical gaps. Herein we study the effects of partial bromination and chlorination on the structure and optoelectronic properties of both graphane and fluorographene. We find brominated and chlorinated fluorographene derivatives to be as stable as graphane with a detailed investigation of the systems band structure revealing significant 1D localization of the charge carriers as well as strongly electron-hole asymmetric effective masses. Lastly using GW and BSE, we investigate the optical adsorption spectra of the aforementioned materials whose first adsorption peak is shown to lie close to the optimal peak position for photovoltaic applications (≈1.5 eV).

Enthalpy is often the focal point when designing monomers for polymer circularity, but much less is explored on how entropy can be exploited to create polymers with synergistic circularity and properties. Here, we design a series of spiro-lactones (SLs) with closed-chain cycloalk(en)yl substituents at the α,α-position of δ-valerolactone (δVL), which, when combined with the parent δVL and -α,α-dialkyl-substituted δVL with open-chain alkyl groups, provide a desired platform for exploring the circular polymer design by focusing on the entropy change of polymerization. These SLs exhibit finely balanced (de)polymerizability that is regulated chiefly by entropy differentiation, allowing both the facile synthesis of polyester PSLs ( up to 1000 kg mol) in a living fashion and selective depolymerization of the PSLs to completely recover monomers under mild conditions (using a recyclable catalyst at 100 °C).

Freshwater ecosystems face significant threats, including pollution, habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. To address these challenges, management strategies and restoration efforts have been broadly implemented. Across Europe, such efforts have resulted in overall improvements in freshwater biodiversity, but recovery has stalled or failed to occur in many localities, which may be partly caused by the limited dispersal capacity of many species.

Unlabelled: APOBEC3 proteins (A3s) play an important role in host innate immunity against viruses and DNA mutations in cancer. A3s-induced mutations in both viral and human DNA genomes vary significantly from non-lethal mutations in viruses to localized hypermutations, such as kataegis in cancer. How A3s are regulated remains largely unknown.

Unlabelled: Current influenza vaccination approaches protect against specific viral strains, but do not consistently induce broad and long-lasting protection to the diversity of circulating influenza viruses. Single-cycle viruses delivered to the respiratory tract may offer a promising solution as they safely express a diverse array of viral antigens by undergoing just one round of cell infection in their host and stimulate broadly protective resident memory T-cell responses in the lung. We have previously developed a vaccine candidate called S-FLU, which is limited to a single cycle of infection by inactivation of the hemagglutinin signal sequence and induces a broadly cross-reactive T-cell response and antibodies to neuraminidase, but fails to induce neutralizing antibodies to hemagglutinin after intranasal administration.

Far-Ultraviolet Plexciton Formation in Water-Covered Indium Clusters.

J Phys Chem Lett

Department of Nature and Environment, Faculty of Liberal Arts, The Open University of Japan, Chiba 261-8586, Japan.

In this work, we study the plexciton in the far-ultraviolet region formed between indium nanoclusters and water molecules. The indium clusters are fabricated on graphene under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and show a strong localized surface plasmon polariton (LSP) absorption band at 6-7 eV. Adsorption of water molecules onto the clusters at 115 K induces a band splitting larger than 1 eV, indicating a strong coupling between the LSP and water 4a ← 1b transition.
