For the first time, a biomimetic ion channel co-modulated simultaneously by conformation and charge using a single stimulus has been demonstrated, and, based on the synergetic effect of this channel, an ultrasensitive nanopore sensor for ATP with a limit of detection down to sub-pM was developed.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is becoming a valuable technique in gas-phase structural biology for identifying local structural motifs and conformations of biological molecules, such as peptides and proteins. This method involves labeling the biomolecule with two dyes, a donor dye and an acceptor dye, that are commonly charged rhodamines. Here we examine how different amino acid (AA) methyl esters linked to the dye via amide linkages can influence the dye transition energy and, consequently, the energy-transfer efficiency, using cryogenic ion fluorescence spectroscopy.

Gold nanobowls (AuNBs) synthesized by the template-free method were deposited on graphene oxide (GO) to obtain an ultrasensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform for folic acid (FA) detection. GO was conditioned in aqueous solutions at various pH values to optimize the adsorption of the FA molecule and the intensity of the SERS signal. It was found that the conditioning procedure influences the orientation of FA on the SERS supports and the quality of the spectra in result.

Aim: There is an urgent need for new antimicrobial compounds with alternative modes of action for the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Background: Carbohydrates and their derivatives are essential for biochemical and medicinal research because of their efficacy in the synthesis of biologically active drugs.

Objective: In the present study, a series of methyl α-D-mannopyranoside (MMP) derivatives (2-6) were prepared via direct acylation, and their biological properties were characterized.

The charge transfer (CT) reactions in nucleic acids are crucial for genome damage and repair and nanoelectronics using DNA as a molecular conductor. Previous experimental and theoretical works underlined the significance of nucleic acid structural dynamics on CT kinetics, requiring models that incorporate the dynamics of the nucleic acid, solvents, and counterions. Here, we investigated hole transfer kinetics in poly adenine single and double strands at various temperatures and the rate enhancement due to adenine-to-7-deazaadenine mutation by means of a QM/MM approach.

Membrane potential is essential in biological signaling and homeostasis maintained by voltage-sensitive membrane proteins. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations incorporating membrane potentials have been extensively used to study the structures and functions of ion channels and protein pores. They can also be beneficial in designing and characterizing artificial ion channels and pores, which will guide further amino acid sequence optimization through comparison between the predicted models and experimental data.
