Supramolecular G-quadruplexes (SGQs) are formed via the cation promoted self-assembly of guanine derivatives into stacks of planar hydrogen-bonded tetramers. Here, we present results on the formation of SGQs made from the 8-(-acetylphenyl)-2'-deoxyguanosine () derivative in the presence of various mono- and divalent cations. NMR and HR ESI-MS data indicate that varying the cation can efficiently tune the molecularity, the fidelity and stability (thermal and kinetic) of the resulting SGQs. The results show that, parallel to the previously reported potassium-templated hexadecamer (·3K), Na, Rb and [Formula: see text] also promote the formation of similar supramolecules with high fidelity and molecularity. In contrast, the divalent cations Pb, Sr and Ba template the formation of octamers (), with the latter two inducing higher thermal stabilities. Molecular dynamics simulations for the hexadecamers containing monovalent cations enabled critical insights that help explain the experimental observations.

Polymyxins, critical last-resort antibiotics, impact the distribution of membrane-bound divalent cations in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. We employed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to model the effect of displacing these ions. Two polymyxin-sensitive and two polymyxin-resistant models of the outer membrane of were investigated.

A mechanistic insight into whey protein isolate (WPI) fibrillation driven by divalent cations.

Food Chem

Protein fibrillation complex mechanisms led to an emerging trend in research for years. The mechanisms behind whey protein isolate (WPI) fibrillation driven by divalent cations remained still a matter of speculation. All cations (Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn) enhanced the microenvironment polarity through π-π stacking, and the amide I and II shifts confirmed the fibrillation.

Ion permeability profiles of renal paracellular channel-forming claudins.

Acta Physiol (Oxf)

February 2025

Clinical Physiology/Nutritional Medicine, Medical Department, Division of Gastroenterology, Infectiology, Rheumatology, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Berlin, Germany.

Aim: Members of the claudin protein family are the major constituents of tight junction strands and determine the permeability properties of the paracellular pathway. In the kidney, each nephron segment expresses a distinct subset of claudins that form either barriers against paracellular solute transport or charge- and size-selective paracellular channels. It was the aim of the present study to determine and compare the permeation properties of these renal paracellular ion channel-forming claudins.

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are compounds with unique structures of hydroxide functional groups on their surfaces, and they have the proper arrangement of divalent and trivalent cations to adjust their unique catalytic actions. LDH was synthesized utilizing the co-precipitation technique and was thermally treated at 300 °C. The prepared compounds were chemically and structurally elucidated using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, BET, TG-DTA, and XPS characterization.
