Genetic association studies showed that Hb F is under the influence of major quantitative trait loci (QTL) in β-thalassemia (β-thal) carriers. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at three major QTLs, BCL11A, HBS1L-MYB intergenic region and XmnI-HBG2 were individually validated in univariate models. However, their relative effect sizes on Hb F regulation are unknown. We genotyped 99 Chinese β-thal carriers for the three major QTLs and performed genetic association studies using three different statistical models, including mass univariate analysis, multivariate linear regression and partial least square regression structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Performances of the three models were compared and effect sizes of the three QTLs in a multivariate model were assessed. Traditional mass univariate analysis and multivariate linear regression showed limited statistical power in our small cohort and the latter was constrained by multicollinearity. Partial least structural equation modeling showed significant positive associations of each QTL (p <0.05) with Hb F regulation, together explained 34.4% of variance. The HBS1L-MYB intergenic region polymorphism (HMIP) demonstrated the highest effect on Hb F prediction with effect size f 0.294. PLS-SEM offered a statistically powerful multivariate model for multi-locus genetic association studies. We reproduced findings of previous studies with a much smaller cohort and demonstrated HMIP as the strongest regulator of Hb F in Chinese β-thal carriers.

Insects represent most of terrestrial animal biodiversity, and multiple reports suggest that their populations are declining globally due to anthropogenic impacts. Yet, a high proportion of insect species remain undescribed and limited data on their population dynamics hamper insect conservation efforts. This is particularly critical in tropical biodiversity hotspots such as Southeast Asia.

Safflower ( L.) is a valuable oil crop due to its bioactive ingredients and high linoleic acid content, which contribute to its antioxidant properties and potential for preventing atherosclerosis. Current research on safflower focuses on understanding the biosynthesis of seed oil through omics strategies, yet there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge of the dynamic changes in lipids and the regulatory mechanisms during seed development.

Perception of antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance among faculty and staff in a medical school: insights from a mixed mode survey in Bahrain.

BMC Public Health

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases, College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Arabian Gulf University, Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

Background: Understanding awareness of antibiotics is crucial in identifying the attitudes of people which could subsequently help shape campaigns and policies addressing this problem. The study aimed to explore awareness of antibiotics use and antibiotic resistance among faculty and staff at the medical institution.

Methodology: All the study participants (faculty & staff) were asked to complete the survey.

Opposite effects of sevoflurane at high and low concentration on the airway inflammation in juvenile asthma rats: A TMT-based proteomics analysis study.

Int Immunopharmacol

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi, Guizhou, China; Translational Neurology Laboratory, Affiliated Hospital of ZunYi Medical University, Zunyi, China. Electronic address:

Background: The incidence of sevoflurane-related adverse respiratory events in children with asthma is notably high. During different phases of sevoflurane anesthesia, asthmatic children's airways are exposed to varying concentrations of the anesthetic. However, the specific effects of different concentrations of sevoflurane on the developing airways with asthmatic hyperreactivity have not been systematically studied.
