The diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD) in young children has been a topic of debate, in part owing to varied interpretation of manic-like symptoms. We examined how expert academic clinicians participating in the pediatric bipolar biobank varied in their interpretation and application of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria and diagnoses. Study co-investigators reviewed 12 standardized narratives and for each marked a visual analog scale with their confidence in the presence of manic episodes and criteria.

Patient and caregiver perspectives are increasingly incorporated into health care research and policymaking, but their inclusion in the quality measure development process often is not robust. We describe a stakeholder panel model for incorporating patient/caregiver voices in the development of patient-reported measures, the Technical Expert/Clinical User/Patient Panel (TECUPP) model. This model is characterized by significant or equal representation of people with lived experience of the disease or condition (as patients or caregivers) to the clinicians and others with technical expertise who typically comprise technical expert panels.

This symposium includes twelve personal narratives from healthcare interpreters who have navigated challenges while interpreting for patients and healthcare providers who do not share a common language. These stories are from trained professionals who speak a variety of spoken and sign languages. They describe what it is like to be a communication tool for a Patient-Physician relationship and the many ways this service takes a toll on their own physical and emotional health.
