Published: June 2017

Purpose: Tissue injury causing immune response is an integral part of surgical procedure. Evaluation of the degree of surgical trauma could help to improve postoperative management and determine the clinical outcomes.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed serum levels of alarmins, including S100A5, S100A6, S100A8, S100A9, S100A11, and S100A12; high-mobility group box 1; and heat-shock protein 70, after elective major abdominal surgery (n = 82). Blood samples were collected for three consecutive days after surgery. The goals were to evaluate the relationships among the serum levels of alarmins and selected surgical characteristics and to test potential of alarmins to predict the clinical outcomes.

Results: Significant, positive correlations were found for high-mobility group box 1 with the length of surgery, blood loss, and intraoperative fluid intake for all three days of blood sampling. The protein S100A8 serum levels showed positive correlations with intensive care unit length of stay, 28-day and in-hospital mortality. The protein S100A12 serum levels had significant, positive correlations with intensive care unit length of stay, 28-day mortality, and in-hospital mortality. We did not find significant differences in alarmin levels between cancer and noncancer subjects.

Conclusion: The high-mobility group box 1 serum levels reflect the degree of surgical injury, whereas proteins S100A8 and S100A12 might be considered good predictors of major abdominal surgery morbidity and mortality.

Background: Locoregional therapy (LRT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) before liver transplantation (LT) has a role in improving the tumor biology and post-LT survival outcome apart from downstaging and bridging. We retrospectively analyzed our database of adult living donor liver transplants (LDLT) for HCC, to compare the survival outcomes in Group-1 (upfront-LT, HCC within Milan/UCSF/AFP<1000 ng/ml) and Group-2 (LT post-LRT, HCC beyond UCSF/irrespective of tumor burden with AFP>1000 ng/ml). We also explored the risk factors for recurrence on follow-up.

Purpose: The C-reactive protein (CRP)-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a newly developed biomarker that combines measurements of CRP, serum albumin, and lymphocyte count. This index provides a thorough assessment of a patient's inflammation level, nutritional condition, and immunological function. The objective of this study is to examine the correlation between the CALLY index and all-cause mortality in COPD patients.

The Role of Severe Vitamin D Deficiency in Predicting the Risk of Severe Exacerbation in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Department of Emergency Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, People's Republic of China.

Background: This study aims to investigate the association between vitamin D levels and the risk of severe acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD).

Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study with 636 COPD patients admitted for exacerbations between January 2021 and December 2022. Patients were categorized based on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels: severe deficiency (<10 ng/mL), deficiency (10-20 ng/mL), insufficiency (20-30 ng/mL), or sufficiency (>30 ng/mL).

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of the sacroiliac joints and spine. Cuproptosis is a newly recognized copper-induced cell death mechanism. Our study explored the novel role of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) in AS, focusing on immune cell infiltration and molecular clustering.

Infant respiratory infections modulate lymphocyte homing to breast milk.

January 2025

Laboratorio de Pediatria Clinica (LIM36), Hospital das Clinicas HCFMUSP, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Introduction: Chemokines and their receptors are essential for leukocyte migration to several tissues, including human milk. Here, we evaluated the homing of T and B lymphocyte subsets to breast milk in response to ongoing respiratory infections in the nursing infant.

Methods: Blood and mature milk were collected from healthy mothers of nurslings with respiratory infections (Group I) and from healthy mothers of healthy nurslings (Group C).
