The purpose of this work was to evaluate the potential of a new transmission detector for real-time quality assurance of dynamic-MLC-based radiotherapy. The accuracy of detecting dose variation and static/dynamic MLC position deviations was measured, as well as the impact of the device on the radiation field (surface dose, transmission). Measured dose variations agreed with the known variations within 0.3%. The measurement of static and dynamic MLC position deviations matched the known deviations with high accuracy (0.7-1.2 mm). The absorption of the device was minimal (~ 1%). The increased surface dose was small (1%-9%) but, when added to existing collimator scatter effects could become significant at large field sizes (≥ 30 × 30 cm2). Overall the accuracy and speed of the device show good potential for real-time quality assurance.

During the COVID-19 pandemic changes in human activity became widespread through official policies and organically in response to the virus's transmission, which in turn, impacted the environment and the economy. The pandemic has been described as a natural experiment that tested how social and economic disruptions impacted different components of the global Earth System. To move this beyond hypotheses, locally-resolved, globally-available measures of how, where, and when human activity changed are critically needed.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is susceptible to noise, just like every other measurement. EELS measurements are also affected by signal blurring, related to the energy distribution of the electron beam and the detector point spread function (PSF). Moreover, the signal blurring caused by the detector introduces correlation effects, which smooth the noise.

A serious limitation to the deployment of IoT solutions in rural areas may be the lack of available telecommunications infrastructure enabling the continuous collection of measurement data. A nomadic computing system, using a UAV carrying an on-board gateway, can handle this; it leads, however, to a number of technical challenges. One is the intermittent collection of data from ground sensors governed by weather conditions for the UAV measurement missions.

Phase contrast imaging is well-suited for studying weakly scattering samples. Its strength lies in its ability to measure how the phase of the electron beam is affected by the sample, even when other imaging techniques yield low contrast. Defect detection and classification in super-high reflector mirrors and their substrates are crucial for manufacturing laser gyroscope systems. This paper presents a prototype designed to meet the requirements for the reflection and transmission of laser gyroscope mirror substrates. The prototype featured two measurement channels (bright field and dark field) and could detect defects on patterned and unpatterned surfaces.
