Purpose: In cardiovascular surgeries, iron deficiency anemia and transfusion of blood products are associated with mortality and morbidity, prolonged hospital stay and poor patient outcomes. Patient blood management (PBM) is a patient-centered approach based on a 'three pillar' model that promotes optimum use of blood and blood products to improve outcomes. This study assessed the potential budget impact of implementing PBM in patients undergoing elective cardiovascular surgery in a private hospital in Turkey.

Cells can communicate with neighboring and more distant cells by secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are lipid bilayer membrane-bound structures that can be packaged with proteins, nucleic acids and lipids that mediate cell-cell signaling. EVs are increasingly recognized to play numerous important roles in both normal physiological processes and pathological conditions.

Imaging interorganelle contacts at a glance.

J Cell Sci

October 2024

Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599, USA.

Eukaryotic cells are compartmentalized into membrane-bound organelles that must coordinate their responses to stimuli. One way that organelles communicate is via membrane contact sites (MCSs), sites of close apposition between organelles used for the exchange of ions, lipids and information. In this Cell Science at a Glance article and the accompanying poster, we describe an explosion of new methods that have led to exciting progress in this area and discuss key examples of how these methods have advanced our understanding of MCSs.

Erythroblast enucleation at a glance.

J Cell Sci

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC 3073, Australia.

Erythroid enucleation, the penultimate step in mammalian erythroid terminal differentiation, is a unique cellular process by which red blood cells (erythrocytes) remove their nucleus and accompanying nuclear material. This complex, multi-stage event begins with chromatin compaction and cell cycle arrest and ends with generation of two daughter cells: a pyrenocyte, which contains the expelled nucleus, and an anucleate reticulocyte, which matures into an erythrocyte. Although enucleation has been compared to asymmetric cell division (ACD), many mechanistic hallmarks of ACD appear to be absent.

Positive-strand RNA virus replication organelles at a glance.

J Cell Sci

September 2024

Sir William Dunn School of Pathology , University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3RE, UK.

Membrane-bound replication organelles (ROs) are a unifying feature among diverse positive-strand RNA viruses. These compartments, formed as alterations of various host organelles, provide a protective niche for viral genome replication. Some ROs are characterised by a membrane-spanning pore formed by viral proteins.
