Slow pyrolysis of hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) sawdust was performed to produce bio-oil and bio-char. The operational variables were as follows: pyrolysis temperature (400-600°C), heating rate (10-50°Cmin) and nitrogen flow rate (50-150cmmin). Physicochemical and thermogravimetric characterizations of hornbeam sawdust were performed. The characteristics of bio-oil and bio-char were analyzed on the basis of various spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques such as FTIR, GC-MS, 1H NMR, SEM, BET. Higher heating value, density and kinematic viscosity of the bio-oil with maximum yield of 35.28% were 23.22MJkg, 1289kgm and 0.6mms, respectively. The bio-oil with relatively high fuel potential can be obtained from the pyrolysis of the hornbeam sawdust and the bio-char with a calorific value of 32.88MJkg is a promising candidate for solid fuel applications that also contributes to the preservation of the environment.

Nowadays, the scarcity of energy resources is promoting the search for alternative energy sources, boosting interest in the use of forest lignocellulosic residue in the energy sector. In this study, the focus is on the energy recovery from two lignocellulosic residues originated during the pruning of ornamental trees (Horse Chestnut, CI, and False Acacia, FA). Both conventional and flash pyrolysis techniques were applied.

Scope: While previously considered inert, recent studies suggest lignin metabolism with unknown metabolic fates is occurring in the gastrointestinal tract of several animal models. This study focuses on analyzing the potential metabolites of lignin.
Methods And Results: The diets of rats include relatively pure birch glucuronoxylan (pureGX) with residual lignin or lignin-rich GX (GXpoly) in their diet.

3-Nitro-4-hydroxy-phenylarsonic acid (NHPA) as a veterinary drug can degraded into highly toxic inorganic arsenic and will be harmful to environment and food safety. Nanocomposites for the uptake of NHPA were obtained by efficiently immobilizing the nano-sized zirconium oxide onto hazelnut shell-based activated carbon using pyrolysis method. We found that the pyrolysis temperature played a crucial role in the adsorptive performances of the nanocomposites.
