Article Synopsis
  • Postural instability during gait initiation is a key factor affecting the quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) because it leads to falls.
  • A study involving both unmedicated PD patients and healthy controls revealed that PD patients had decreased movement metrics like center of pressure displacement and first step length, which are linked to dopaminergic function in the putamen and improved with levodopa treatment.
  • The findings highlight the role of dopamine in the initial phases of posture control, while indicating that other factors such as foot placement specifically impact later phases of gait initiation.
