Background: Aging is associated with sustained low-grade inflammation, which has been linked to age-related diseases and mortality. Long-term exercise programs have been shown to be effective to for attenuating this process; however, subsequent detraining might negate some of these benefits. Master athletes, as a model of lifelong consistent exercise practice, have been suggested to present similar inflammatory profiles to untrained young adults.

Significant sex-related differences have been observed in type 2 diabetes consequences such as mortality. However, the effect of sex on the association between CAN and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes is currently unknown.

Background: Proenkephalin A 119-159 (penKid) is a novel blood biomarker for real-time assessment of kidney function and was found to be independently associated with worsening kidney function and mortality. A novel penKid-based estimated glomerular filtration rate equation (eGFR), outperforms current creatinine-based eGFR equations in predicting iohexol or iothalamate plasma clearance-based measured GFR. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the predictive value of penKid and eGFR for all-cause mortality in stable patients at high cardiovascular risk.

The placenta is a fetal endocrine organ that secretes many neuroactive factors, including steroids, that play critical roles in brain development. The study of the placenta-brain axis and the links between placental function and brain development represents an emerging research area dubbed "neuroplacentology." The placenta drives many circulating fetal steroids to very high levels during gestation.

Background: The consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs) increases the risk of heart disease morbidity and mortality. However, the relationship between measurable indicators of TFAs and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in general population remains unclear.
Methods: 1478 adult participants with complete information on circulating TFA and NT-proBNP levels from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000 were included in our cross-sectional survey.
