Published: September 2016

Meteor detection and analysis is an essential topic in the field of astronomy. In this paper, a high-sensitivity and high-time-resolution imaging device for the detection of faint meteoric events is presented. The instrument is based on a fast CCD camera and an image intensifier. Two such instruments form a double-station observation network. The MAIA (Meteor Automatic Imager and Analyzer) system has been in continuous operation since 2013 and has successfully captured hundreds of meteors belonging to different meteor showers, as well as sporadic meteors. A data processing pipeline for the efficient processing and evaluation of the massive amount of video sequences is also introduced in this paper.

A 73-year-old male with a recent finding of pericardial effusion and syncope was evaluated with point of care ultrasound for recurrent effusion. A thickened left ventricle and recurrent pericardial effusion were found. Unexpectedly, on scanning the inferior vena cava (IVC), extensive portal venous gas was identified, a finding previously described as a "meteor shower".

Nonlinear examination of the 'Heat Wave' and 'Meteor Shower' effects between spot and futures markets of the precious metals.

This paper researches two volatility transmission phenomena that take place within ('heat wave') and between ('meteor shower') spot and futures markets of four precious metals-gold, silver, platinum and palladium. We create conditional volatilities by considering three types of Markov switching GARCH models in combination with three different distribution functions. Conditional volatilities are subsequently embedded in Markov switching mean model.

John Couch Adams: mathematical astronomer, college friend of George Gabriel Stokes and promotor of women in astronomy.

Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP), An der Sternwarte 16, 14482 Potsdam, Germany.

John Couch Adams predicted the location of Neptune in the sky, calculated the expectation of the change in the mean motion of the Moon due to the Earth's pull, and determined the origin and the orbit of the Leonids meteor shower which had puzzled astronomers for almost a thousand years. With his achievements Adams can be compared with his good friend George Stokes. Not only were they born in the same year but were also both senior wranglers, received the Smith's Prizes and Copley medals, lived, thought and researched at Pembroke College, and shared an appreciation of Newton.

Meteoroid bombardment of the Earth-Moon system must have caused catastrophic damage to the terrestrial ecosphere. However, ancient meteoroid impacts and their relations to environmental changes are not well understood because of erosion and/or resurfacing processes on Earth. Here, we investigate the formation ages of 59 lunar craters with fresh morphologies and diameters greater than approximately 20 km and first find that 8 of 59 craters were formed simultaneously.
