Purpose: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of PPAR agonists on the differentiation and metabolic features of porcine mesenchymal stem cells induced to the adipogenic or myogenic lineages.

Methods: Bone marrow MSCs from neonate pigs were isolated and identified by cell proliferation, cell surface markers or the gene expression of stem cells (CD44, CD90, CD105 or Oct4 and Nanog, respectively). Cells were differentiated into adipose or muscle cells and treated with the PPAR agonists; adipogenic and myogenic differentiation was promoted by adding these compounds. The expression of PPARγ (an adipose marker) and MyoD1 and MyHC (muscle markers), metabolic changes and expression levels of metabolic enzymes involved in glycolysis, lipogenesis, lipolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway were tested by qPCR.

Results: MSCs from neonate pigs exhibited high proliferation and were positive for CD44, CD90 and CD105 markers and Oct4 and Nanog expression. The treatment that promoted the highest expression of PPARγ was 50 µM of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) c9 t11 (6.44 ± 0.69-fold, p ≤ 0.0001) in the adipose differentiation, and upregulation of HX2, ACCAα, ATGL, LPL and G6DP (p ≤ 0.0001) and downregulation of PFK and ACCAβ (p ≤ 0.0001) were found. For muscle differentiation, the best treatment was 50 µM of CLA c10 t12 (59.72 ± 4.72-fold, p ≤ 0.0001), and metabolic changes were upregulation of PFK, ACCAβ, G6DP, CPT1 and PPARβ/δ (p ≤ 0.0001), but no effect was observed with HX2 and ACCAα (p ≥ 0.05).

Conclusions: Our results suggest that differentiated cells exhibit a typical cell lineage metabolism and higher efficiencies both in anabolism and catabolism.

Research Question: Are the combined genotypes and haplotypes of vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms (FokI, ApaI and TaqI) associated with susceptibility to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic features of the disease?

Design: This case-control study included 46 women with PCOS and 48 controls. Genotypes of the VDR gene were determined using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Waist circumference, and parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism were evaluated in all women.

Article Synopsis
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are significantly more common in men, but women have a worse prognosis following repair.
  • A study conducted across five hospitals in São Paulo from 2012 to 2022 analyzed data from 951 patients, revealing that while more men were treated, women presented with smaller aneurysms and higher rates of complications, particularly obstructions.
  • The research concluded that despite similar operative mortality rates between genders, women faced more obstructive complications and had smaller aneurysmal diameters.

This umbrella meta-analysis aims to investigate two surgical treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA): endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open surgery repair (OSR). Our study aims to elucidate the 30-day mortality rate, reintervention rates, and aneurysm-related mortality in EVAR versus OSR for AAA.  We conducted a comprehensive assessment of meta-analyses ( = 34 articles) comparing EVAR and OSR for AAA.

Background: Accurate dosimetry is crucial in radiotherapy to ensure optimal radiation dose delivery to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues. Traditional dosimetry techniques using homogeneous phantoms may not accurately represent the complex anatomical variations in cervical cancer patients, highlighting the need to compare dosimetry results obtained from different phantom models.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to design and evaluate an anthropomorphic heterogeneous female pelvic (AHFP) phantom for radiotherapy quality assurance in cervical cancer treatment.

Objective: This meta-analysis was designed to assess if pre-operative low skeletal muscle mass impacts mortality rates of patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair.

Methods: Datasets of PubMed, CENTRAL, ScienceDirect, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched from 1 January 1980 to 15 December 2021 for studies assessing the role of low skeletal muscle mass on mortality rates of AAA repair. Studies measuring skeletal muscle mass on computed tomography scans and reporting long-term mortality (>1 year) were included.
