Exposure to coal and coal ashes can cause harmful effects in in vitro and in vivo systems, mainly by the induction of oxidative damage. The aim of this work was to assess cytotoxic and genotoxic effects using the V79 cell line treated with coal and coal fly ash particles derived from a coal power plant located in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Two coal samples (COAL11 and COAL16) and two coal fly ash samples (CFA11 and CFA16) were included in this study. COAL16 was co-firing with a mixture of fuel oil and diesel oil. The comet assay data showed that exposure of V79 cells to coal and coal fly ash particles induced primary DNA lesions. Application of lesion-specific endonucleases (FPG and ENDO III) demonstrated increased DNA effects indicating the presence of high amounts of oxidative DNA lesions. The cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome assay analysis showed that exposure of V79 cells to high concentrations of coal and coal fly ash particles induced cytotoxic effects (apoptosis and necrosis) and chromosomal instability (nucleoplasmic bridges, nuclear buds, and micronucleus (MN) formation). These results may be associated with compounds contained in the surface of the particles as hazardous elements, ultrafine/nanoparticles, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which were detected in the samples. There are many similarities between early embryonic development and tumorigenesis. The occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs) and glioblastoma (GBM) are both related to the abnormal development of neuroectodermal cells. To obtain genes related to both NTDs and GBM, as well as small molecule drugs with potential clinical application value.

Understanding the sources and deposition processes of cadmium (Cd) in freshwater lakes is essential for effective pollution management. This study investigated the Cd concentrations and isotopes in a sediment core from Chaohu Lake, spanning the past 200 years. The results revealed that the Cd concentrations in the sediments decreased with depth, ranging from 1.

Maximizing the sorption capacity of gaseous Hg by sulfur-functionalized biochar can lead to increased energy consumption and the production of secondary environmental pollutants such as greenhouse gases. This study evaluates the environmental impact of producing sulfurized biochar through a life cycle assessment (LCA), weighing these impacts against the benefits of enhanced Hg removal efficiencies. The biochar's Hg adsorption capacity, which ranges between 3 and 22 μg-Hg/g-biochar, is influenced by several factors: it increases with higher sulfur loading (0-15 %), higher O levels (0-21 %), and longer pyrolysis times (1-5 h).

CO in coal mine underground spaces can easily cause casualties among miners. The humidity in coal mines is relatively high, and traditional Cu-Mn catalysts are prone to deactivation. Compared to traditional Cu-Mn catalysts, doping with Sn enhances the activity and water resistance of Cu-Mn catalysts.

The dissolution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from coal tar at former manufactured gas plant (FMGP) sites is a long-term threat to groundwater quality. The dissolution rate is often limited by an increase in the viscosity of the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) as the lower molecular weight compounds are depleted over time, and this slow mass transfer prevents the effective application of remediation technologies that rely on NAPL-to-water mass transfer to remove or degrade mass. Increasing subsurface temperatures has the potential to increase mass transfer at FMGP sites by increasing PAH solubility and reducing NAPL viscosity.
